  • Jennifer Higdon ’86 scores again at 2018 Grammy Awards Feb 2, 2018 12:01 PM BGSU alumna Jennifer Higdon won the Best Contemporary Classical Composition Grammy Award for a second time, for "Viola Concerto." The piece was co-commissioned by the Library of Congress and the Curtis Institute of Music. It was performed by soloist Roberto Díaz with the Nashville Symphony and conducted by Giancarlo Guerrero.

McPhee, who received the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s best player in 1982 at BGSU, was the GM of the Washington Capitals from 1997 to 2014.

BGSU lacrosse won more than 75 percent of its games and three Midwest Lacrosse Association championships. He arrived on campus in 1985 after a marathon international flight from his native India to John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City, and then an additional leg to Detroit, and finally an airport shuttle ride an hour-and-a-half south to Bowling Green, reaching town in the wee hours of the morning.

Weiss almost had his dream of playing baseball derailed when he was 16 years old. A pitcher for his Canton Glenwood High School baseball team in the early 1960s, Weiss was covering a play at the plate when he broke his right wrist in two places after a player from the opposing team crashed into him.

In order to make a really great painting, I had to take a really great photo because I based all of my work off of photographs. That’s really how my photography blossomed. I’ve always been fascinated with people. People are the most interesting things… the most important things on this world. To paint anything else but a person, I’ve always struggled with. I feel like photographing anything else besides a person is a struggle, too. I think that people in general – the connections we have – inspires me to keep taking pictures,” said Hartley, 28, who graduated from BGSU in 2009 with a BFA in 2-Dimensional Studies.

  • Married Mascots Feb 9, 2015 7:00 AM One couple’s story has another BGSU connection as they were the University’s beloved mascots, Freddie and Frieda. Alex ’06 and Kristen ’07 Wright are two out of only three Falcon mascot marriages. Alex was Freddie his senior year after completing a term as student body president the previous year. When asked what prompted him to become the mascot, he said, “My earliest memories and pictures of Bowling Green are with ‘the birds’. It looked like fun, a different way to give back, and a way to spread my childhood Falcon spirit to my fellow students.”

At about the same time he retired from the Air Force in October 2013, he received a Bachelor of Science in Technology degree from BGSU, though he never stepped foot on the campus. His degree in learning design and technology (LDT) was done completely online and during times that were convenient for him to “attend classes.”

The several tons of scenery and rigging you see has all been carefully planned and executed to seamlessly maintain the magic of theater. Auld has the unusual job of calculating how to make people and all types of things “fly” on stages ranging from small churches to theaters to large arenas. He is one of only a few hundred people in the world who work professionally at this.

William remembers visiting campus as a prospective student with his mother and father. “We were just walking around when a man came over to shake our hands. He said, ‘Hello, I’m President Homer Williams.’ Well, we were just so impressed that the president would come out to meet us. I knew right then that Bowling Green was where I wanted to be,” said William.

But one artist and BGSU alumna combines her faith in God with her love of art. Sister Jane Mary Sorosiak '83 is a Sister of St. Francis who received her master's degree in art at Bowling Green State University in the 1960s. Today, she weaves together art and faith to further her ministry by creating beautiful and inspiring ceramic murals for churches and other buildings.

  • Alumna Julia Hage passionate about public health Hage’s journey at Bowling Green State University began in pursuit of a degree in biology, but as she entered her senior year she enrolled in an introduction to public health course that sparked a deeper interest. She became passionate about the world of health and understanding the disparities in access, prevention and care that occur worldwide.

  • BGSU alumnus named best Ohio TV reporter by Associated Press BGSU alumnus Duane Pohlman was recently named best Ohio TV reporter by the Associated Press. He is an investigative reporter for WKRC-TV, Channel 12, in Cincinnati, where he has worked since September 2016. Prior to landing his current position at WKRC, Pohlman worked at several television stations across the country.

  • BGSU celebrates history-making Changing Lives for the World fundraising campaign Launched in 2014, the Changing Lives for the World campaign raised $255 million in total, with $101.7 million raised for scholarships and student aid.

  • BGSU recognizes 2018 10 Under 10 honorees From basketball coaches and photographers, to environmentalists and advocates, leaders and visionaries, risk takers and dreamers, recent Falcon alumni are changing lives for the world. To honor the accomplishments of our recent alumni, the BGSU 10 Under 10 Award was established. The 2018 class was honored during Homecoming Oct. 12.

  • BGSU supports local agencies BGSU campuses in Huron and Bowling Green, as well as BGSU at Levis Commons, are supporting local health and safety agencies by donating PPE supplies and providing facilities to organizations in both communities.

  • BGSU to hold commencement Dec. 13, 14 Bowling Green State University will celebrate its 296th graduation in two ceremonies at the Stroh Center Dec. 13 and Dec. 14. Alumnae addressing the candidates include Sheryl Maxfield ’81 and Laurie Stevenson ’88, who are both members of Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s Cabinet. The December graduating class includes 1,047 candidates.

  • Chorale group takes talents on the road thanks to crowdfunding BGSU’s student chorale group put their musical talents on display for audiences all over the Midwest earlier this spring as part of a multi-state musical tour made possible by donations from BGSU alumni and other supporters.

  • College Alumni Award recipient Tom Ullom We were very pleased to honor criminal justice alumnus, Mr. Tom Ullom ’93 at the Annual College Alumni Awards Ceremony on March 18. Recipients are selected from each college to acknowledge and celebrate their accomplishments for their service and work in their respective fields.

  • Falcon Club Member Spotlight Scott Miller was the first person in his family to graduate from college; his sister Molly, also a BG graduate, was the second. BG was where he became a responsible student and a mature adult. His BG experiences were vast and, even starting a year late, proved perfect timing for him.

  • Falcon Club Member Spotlight Jon Caraccilo describes why he gives in one word, pride. For the accomplishments of all students both in the classroom and on the athletic fields, he is exceedingly proud of BGSU and his ability to maintain a close relationship with his alma mater since walking campus as a student 25 years ago.

  • Mary-Jon Ludy recognized for supporting student research Dr. Mary-Jon Ludy, assistant professor of food and nutrition, received the Undergraduate Faculty Mentor of the Year Award handed out each year by the Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship (CURS) to outstanding faculty mentors based on student nominations. CURS supports and fosters undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activities across all disciplines.

  • Shore, Traul appointed to BGSU Board of Trustees Amy Shore, of Bexley, Ohio, and Howard Traul, II of Bellefontaine, have been appointed by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine to the Bowling Green State University Board of Trustees. Shore will complete the term of former trustee Karen Morrison and will serve until 2022. Traul will serve a nine-year term.

  • Summer Experience: Shadowcast internship brightens film students' summer Jillian Riley, a film production major at Bowling Green State University, spent the summer in California at Shadowcast Pictures, founded and owned by BGSU alumni Jay and Chrissy Ellison.

  • Swimming/Diving Reunion Former Falcon swimmers and divers were recognized at an all-program reunion held in conjunction with the November 9 meet vs. Marshall. Alumni from both the women’s and men’s programs were recognized during the meet's break, with special attention paid to the accomplishments of Dr. Jean Bailey Campbell.

  • University Advancement BGSU Alumni stay connected with regional networks, affinity groups, special events and opportunities to make gifts to support students, professors and programs.
