BGSU PROFESSOR OF PAINTING
Drawn to the arts from a young age, Alaina Touma '26 often entered art shows during elementary and middle school. That passion continued into high school and during college at Bowling Green State University, the largest state art school in Ohio.
She recently achieved a significant milestone in her career as an artist: one of her paintings was selected for display in the nationally recognized Albrecht-Kemper Museum in St. Joseph, Missouri.
"I entered three of my artworks, and my painting, 'I Spy,' was selected for display," Touma said. "I didn't know what to expect when I was a freshman, but I am extremely happy to be where I am now, and to see my work being enjoyed by others."
As a student at Bowling Green, Touma participated in campus art exhibitions, showcasing her work and gaining confidence in her skillset. Her advisor, professor Mille Guldbeck, challenged her to go beyond northwest Ohio and apply for the National Juried Undergraduate Exhibition.
"Working with students in our studio program, one of my requirements for advanced seniors is to enter an exhibition outside the School of Art," Guldbeck said. "The National Juried Undergraduate Exhibition is a premier annual event showcasing emerging artistic talent from across the country.
"With 47 artworks from 31 students, this speaks highly of Ms. Touma's skill and ability and shines a positive light on the strength of our program, where students are constantly challenged and encouraged in their pursuits."
With Guldbeck as her advisor, Touma found the perfect balance of support and encouragement, resulting in growth as an artist. Touma credits Guldbeck's approach and the studio arts program for her success.
"BGSU was a great fit for me because it pushed me to improve my skills, while providing a home-like atmosphere and a supportive environment," said Touma, who earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art. "The classes I took and the professors I had provided me with opportunities for my art to succeed and helped me find paths that would work best for me."
Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, BGSU encourages students like Touma to push traditional boundaries and provides them with the freedom to create their own artistic career path. Graduates can follow traditional paths as studio artists, photographers, illustrators or arts administrators. However, Touma plans to apply her artistic background to wearable art.
