Artist's Statement

Living in a world that is increasingly filled with visually rich orchestrated compositions from slick advertising to highly refined repetitive urban environments, I often find myself  influenced and attracted to unexpected interactions or opportunistic happenstances where  everyday objects, urban decay, and the detritus of human life provide unusual chance  arrangements. My work is a mixed media approach that reflects an assortment of materials from wooden components that provide honest functionality as dynamic compositional  supports, to concrete organizational elements and colorful fabric interjections. The use of  everyday materials such as concrete, wood, fabric and glass become elements for assemblages  that fill a disciplinary space between painting and sculpture, in the form of large-scale wall  constructions. My choices of soft media push a notion of domesticity, while repeated cast  concrete forms contrast both physically and materially introducing a rugged industrial quality.

Blocks of blown glass impersonate the sky seen through a window; fragmented concrete  tiles share likeness with a ceramic flowerpot. Materials are manipulated and presented in such  a way as to mimic the original source or form, although the compositional re-interpretation is  designed to provide an alternate avenue of viewer involvement asking that the works be  understood materially while simultaneously creating an aesthetic extension beyond the original  form. Looking around our hyper-industrialized world, an often lifeless and bleak space, my work  is focused beyond a singular aesthetic pleasure. It is designed to create a kind of tension,  materially, physically, and compositionally that offers instead a space of aesthetic interaction  and compositional bliss.
