Computer Science - Digital Forensics

One of today's most in-demand fields in the information technology field is Digital Forensics. It focuses on protection of digital assets and intelligence, Digital Forensics is about response: identifying the hack, understanding the source, and documenting the attack trace when a breach is made. In recent years, attention has been on Digital Forensics as the cyber-attacks have become more sophisticated and prevalent.

A specialization in Digital Forensics at BGSU provides a unique experience in identifying and responding to cybersecurity breaches and network hacks. The specialization courses also follow the cybersecurity and digital forensics standards by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Curriculum

The curriculum requires 49 hours of credit for the computer science major (34 hours of computer science core courses and 15 hours of digital forensics courses) and 30 hours of additional requirements. BGSU's computer science department received national funding to incorporate national standards into the curriculum and teaching tools. Students will be trained to use state-of-the-art equipment, and they will explore the theoretical aspects of digital forensics. Through a series of laboratory exercises they will use forensic tools in hands-on activities that illustrate the importance of employing standardized methods to the integrity of test results.

Internships and Careers

Students majoring in computer science, including the digital forensics specialization, must complete at least one co-op or internship before graduation. There is a course that prepares students for the internship experience that covers job fairs, resume writing, interview strategies, job searching and employer expectations. The department has connections with many major regional employers where our students do practical computer-related work as a full-time or part-time paid employee for approximately three months.

Upon completion of the baccalaureate degree, students in Computer Science are expected to be able to:
