Artist's Statement

Landscape paintings can be considered a “cliché,” but I find value in capturing something that is recognizable to all who view my work. In the past year, I have taken photos of every cloud formation that I have found interesting. Through my process of photographing, sketching, and finally painting these moments, I alter the landscape through my experience of painting it. My paintings are a like a visual journal. By looking at them one experiences the passing of time; both through the day, as I document the light of the sun, and through the year, as you view each brushstroke and the care taken in creating these images.

Oil paint is uniquely suited to my style of working. It allows for my instant gratification as each decision I make directly effects my painting. By layering the oils, I build a visual history into the painting that tells the story of its creation. My experience in making the work is just as, if not more, important than the experience of viewing it. These paintings, while small, contain large swaths of sky with a thin, dark band of trees or buildings at the bottom that ground the painting in realism instead of abstraction. I am typically drawn to and depict violent clouds, or the rising and setting sun in my work. These moments of intense transition speak to my mindset as the painter and allow for the use of heavily saturated color to exaggerate the beauty of those moments.
