Artist's Statement

Throughout my life I felt as if I needed to rush to the next level as quickly as possible without really stopping to take a moment to breathe. I stuffed in as many projects as I could, involve myself in as much as I could, and worked as much as I could. Though this sounds great in theory, it was not until the pandemic that I realized that I cannot sustain that type of workflow healthily without burning out completely. In 2021 I started to slow down and process everything that is happening around me. I realized the drawing studies I was doing were haphazardly and poorly done, I overbooked myself, and some relationships I made were very surface level and unfulfilling. I was not productively growing I was instead rapidly burning out and distracting it with busy work.

With my piece I take a moment to slow down and pay attention to what is going on around me. I show snapshots of my environment that I work with in a day-to-day basis. I capture moments of peacefulness and beauty in the most common and mundane aspects of my life. I enjoy observing lighting and how it affects the tone and mood of paintings. I made full use of that in my thesis.

This work is prints of a triptych digital painting. From left to right I have Morning, Noon, and Evening. The width of the painting represents how much of my day is consumed by each location and the height represents how long it feels like I am there in the moment. I hope by viewing my piece others can also take a moment to stop, slow down, and reflect on how they feel in the present moment.
