Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

Computational Data Science

Computational data science is a rapidly evolving interdisciplinary field that is in high demand. A Bachelor of Science in computer science with a specialization in computational data science provides a successful career pathway into the field. This course of study requires both theoretical statistics background for data analysis and practical algorithmic computing skills for data processing.

Quality classroom experiences

BGSU Computer Science fosters a comprehensive and collaborative student-centered learning environment. All computer science major classes are taught by dedicated faculty, not graduate assistants, and are offered in small class sizes. Highly qualified professors provide for a strong, interactive, and practical learning environment for students to gain the necessary expertise to succeed in high-demand occupations.

The Computer Science Department at BGSU was the first of its kind in the state of Ohio when it was established in 1969.

Career - what can you do with a computational data science degree?

Computer science majors are required to complete one departmentally approved co-op experience. Students receive academic credit, valuable practical experience, and good pay for co-op experiences while growing both personally and professionally.

Career paths

  • Data analyst
  • Data architect
  • Data engineer
  • Data scientist
  • Machine learning engineer
  • Software engineer
  • Database administrator

Curriculum

The computer science major includes a strong set of core courses designed to provide students with a broad base of computing concepts and skills as well as a large selection of specialized elective courses. The computational data science specialization gives students a strong foundation in machine learning, database management, and high performing computing, while providing a statistics background. In addition, programming projects in computer science courses give students experience working in a variety of computing environments.

Required courses

Criminal Justice

Sample courses

  • Introduction to Machine Learning
  • Parallel Computing
  • Database Management Systems
  • Python for Computational & Data Science

Admissions Information

Computer science majors must meet one of the following admission criteria: an SAT math score of 550 or higher or an ACT math score of 22 or higher. Students not meeting these criteria will need to take appropriate math course(s) at the University before declaring their major to Computer Science. Many high schools do not offer courses in computer programming or computer science, and incoming students are not expected to have such a background.

Academic Investment in Mathematics and Science (AIMS) program

All AIMS Scholars have a unique opportunity to strengthen their academic skills and to increase their likelihood of academic success in college.

The AIMS program has two scholarship packages with distinct requirements.

BGSU College of Arts and Sciences

The Computational Data Science program is part of the Department of Computer Science in the BGSU College of Arts and Sciences.
