Artist's Statement

As an artist interested in illustration, the natural world, and a future as an art educator, my work involves advancing my understanding of the elements of art and realism. To be the best I can has always been a driving force for me. Working to continually improve my techniques and ability to render an accurate drawing is achieved through continuous practice, rigorous reflection, and honest critiquing. These drawings depict my exploration with different textures and forms as I continue to push and mature as an artist. These works also demonstrate my technical understanding, drafting abilities, and knowledge to inspire others.

My favorite way of expressing technique is realism and has always been through the depiction of animals and nature. There is something particularly inspiring about trying to depict nature as naturally as possible. I admire the natural way things look and have no desire to change that. Realism allows for very specific, critical, and measurable critiques. The calm and recognizable animals shown make the drawing very approachable. That allows even the audience to be more comfortable making critiques of my work.

My process is very meticulous and exact. The focus and intentionality of depicting realism are the most fitting for representing the beauty and exactness of nature. The textures of fur, feather, skin, and eyes of animals have so much variety. By continuously choosing different subjects, I can best develop my skill and show my technical skillset. Drawing subjects with only graphite is another detail that makes my work approachable. All you need is a pencil to start, which is what I do.
