Regression Analysis in Stata
Regression Log     Regression Do
Instructor: Hsueh-Sheng Wu
Monday, February 18, 12:30-1:30 pm
CFDR Conference Room, 7C Williams Hall
Regression is one of the most commonly used statistical techniques. However, there is little discussion about what statistical evidence is needed for examining certain research questions and how regression analyses should be specified to generate such evidence. The goal of this workshop is to address these issues and provide a better understanding about the link between research questions and regression analyses. The workshop will cover four topics, including (1) how to find an adequate regression model for the research question of interest; (2) what options in regression commands should be specified to take into account dependent observations and/or observations selected with unequal probabilities; (3) how to test the equality, the linear combination, and the nonlinear combination of regression coefficients; and (4) how to analyze marginal effects to enhance the interpretation of regression results.

Event History Analysis
Instructor: Hsueh-Sheng Wu
Monday, April 1, 12:30-1:30 pm
CFDR Conference Room, 7C Williams Hall
Event history analysis is a technique that social scientists use to examine time individuals need to transit from one status to another and what factors may influence such a transition. Different from OLS regressions, event history analysis is better in retaining respondents with incomplete data and establishing the temporal order of independent variables and outcome variables. This workshop will demonstrate how to construct event history data and conduct Life Table, Cox regression and Discrete Time Analysis.

Introduction to the American Community Survey (ACS)
ACS log       ACS do
Instructor: Hsueh-Sheng Wu
Monday, September 24, 12:30-1:30 pm
CFDR Conference Room, 7C Williams Hall

The ACS is a nationwide survey providing yearly information on social, economic, demographic, and housing characteristics of the population. The ACS surveys people living in housing units and group quarters throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. To date, ACS provides annual data from 2007 through 2017. This workshop provides an introduction to ACS 2017 data and demonstrates how to download, manage, and analyze the data.

How to Model Moderating and Mediating Effects

Instructor: Hsueh-Sheng Wu
Monday, November 19, 12:30-1:30 pm
CFDR Conference Room, 7C Williams Hall

Moderation and mediation are two important concepts that social scientists often use to theorize how the association between an independent variable and a dependent variable is related to the presence of a third variable. This workshop reviews what conceptual differences between moderating variables and mediating variables are, how to test moderating effects and mediating effects, and how to incorporate moderating variables and mediating variables into the same model

Instructor: Hsueh-Sheng Wu
Monday, May 22, 12:30–1:30 pm
CFDR Conference Room, 7C Williams Hall

Researchers often need to perform managerial and computational tasks not only on a single variable, but also on multiple variables. This workshop demonstrates how to use commands such as “array,” “foreach,”, “forvalue,” and “macro” in SAS or Stata to simplify these tasks. When these commands are adopted in the programming code, researchers can efficiently complete these tasks and easily identify errors in the code.

Grant Writing
Instructor: Wendy Manning
Monday, June 12, 11:30–12:30 pm
CFDR Conference Room, 7C Williams Hall

This workshop will guide you through the stages of planning and executing a grant proposal that clearly explains your potential unique contribution to research. From the early stages of defining the significance of your project and assessing the feasibility to the final stages of planning a budget and routing the proposal, this workshop will focus especially on grant-writing advice for faculty and advanced graduate students who are preparing their first internal and external funding proposals.

Sequence Analysis Using TraMineR
Instructor: Matthias Studer, University of Geneva, Switzerland
Tuesday, July 11, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
103 Psychology Building

Pre-registration is required
This workshop introduces TraMineR, a program which uses R for mining, describing and visualizing sequences of states or events. Its primary aim is the analysis of biographical longitudinal data in the social sciences, such as data describing careers or family trajectories. Topics include a brief introduction to R, descriptive analysis and visualization, longitudinal data handling, creating typologies of sequences, and advanced clustering.  This is a one-day, hands-on workshop.

Introduction to the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP)
Instructor: Hsueh-Sheng Wu
Monday, July 31, 11:30-12:30 pm
CFDR Conference Room, 7C Williams Hall
The Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), overseen by the U.S. Census Bureau, is a continuous series of survey of national panels (1984-2014) to generate reports on sources and amounts of income, labor force participation, and welfare program participation and eligibility. Different from previous panels, SIPP 2014 panel data was redesigned in terms of how many times households were interviewed each year, whether an Event History Calendar was used, and what topics were covered in the survey. This workshop provides an introduction to SIPP 2014 panel data and demonstrates how to download and manage the data in SAS and Stata.
