CLASSICS

The program is designed to introduce students to the most important areas of classical civilization including art, history, philosophy, language and literature. The classical civilization major is excellent preparation for students who wish to do graduate work in ancient art, history, or philosophy, and for students who wish to teach at the college or university level.

FRENCH

If you're hoping to work in global business, learning French can be a major plus on your resumé — it's the second most important language for business. Plus, the language is spoken on five continents and regions in the world (Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and North America).

GERMAN

Studying German provides undergraduate students insight into some of the oldest and richest cultural traditions in Europe. It also gives students a firm grasp on the leading European economies. Spoken in the Federal Republic of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, German is the most frequently used language in business and tourism after English.

Latin is the most venerable language in the Western world. Many of the most influential works were written in Latin which was still the language of culture less than 200 years ago, and a knowledge of Latin is useful for a more thorough understanding of the English language. Latin is excellent preparation for students in pre-law, pre-dental and pre-medical programs. It is also excellent for students who wish to do graduate work in ancient art, history or philosophy.

Our department explores the language, traditions, strong history and literature of Russia. By studying Russian, you're putting yourself into the shoes of hundreds of millions of people and learning the language of the largest country in the world.

BGSU offers a minor in Italian. We welcome students interested in culinary arts, fashion, film, language, literature and music to join us. Exposure to Italian culture, language, and history can enrich students' lives and prepare them for the future.

JAPANESE

Japanese language courses help students develop strong speaking skills with the help of regular conversation meetings, sessions in the Language Learning Center, and tutoring. Early in the first year of study students begin learning traditional script. There are ample opportunities to practice with native speakers of Japanese. Most students regularly take part in Japanese Club activities.
