The Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) offers workshops for the BGSU teaching community on a variety of topics related to creating, adapting, and/or assessing courses and course content as well as implementing academic tools and technology.

CFE workshop topics include:

In this workshop, we will reflect on course design and delivery. We will review standards for high-quality course design (Quality Matters and BGSU rubrics) and share best practices for designing an engaging and student-friendly Canvas course. The workshop duration is 1 hour.

In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Identify standards for high quality course design
  • Reflect on your personal strategies for course design and delivery
  • Identify and share your best-practices, lessons learned, and helpful resources regarding course design and teaching
  • Use BGSU and QM rubrics to self-assess and enhance aspects of your course design and pedagogy  

During this workshop, you will learn about BGSU’s course evaluation process and discuss ways to apply data to enhance teaching and learning in future semesters. We will explore campus-wide and college-specific results from previous semesters and review how to access course evaluation results and feedback. We will also discuss pedagogical tools and strategies based on each of the six common evaluative questions. The workshop duration is 1 hour.

  • Discuss campus-wide results
  • Access course evaluation results for specific courses you teach
  • Share and discuss pedagogical strategies for the 6 common questions  

Camtasia is a powerful application that allows you to record your screen, create, and share dynamic videos. You can use Camtasia to record PowerPoint lectures, Canvas course introductions, homework reviews, and other custom videos that are tailored around your course content. You will get hands-on experience by producing and editing a video and integrating it into your Canvas course. The workshop duration is 2 hours.

In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Compare and contrast BGSU approved screen capture software
  • Produce a screen capture recording using Camtasia
  • Edit the video using Camtasia
  • Integrate your video into your Canvas course

Requirements: Camtasia installed on a laptop.

Please note: While this workshop is open to all members of the BGSU teaching community, only Faculty can request Camtasia from ITS using the University Device Software Installation Request.  

This workshop serves as an introduction to the creation of two types of accessible documents: word processor files and slideshow presentations. You will learn the basic steps to making Word Documents and PowerPoints accessible to visually impaired readers. During this workshop, you will also engage with the accessibility checker provided by Microsoft Suite to investigate and remedy accessibility issues present within existing documents. All BGSU faculty members, staff, and graduate students interested in learning how to create accessible documents will benefit from the opportunity to practice remediating sample documents. The workshop duration is 1.5 hours.

In this workshop you will learn how to:

  • Identify the basic steps required for document accessibility
  • Design basic accessible documents
  • Locate and utilize the Accessibility Checker provided by Microsoft Suite
  • Fix accessibility issues discovered by the Accessibility Checker  

In this workshop, we will discuss how to create a New Quiz in Canvas and how to set up quiz settings. New Quizzes is an updated assessment engine that integrates with Canvas and replaces the Classic Quizzes functionality. We will explore new question types such as Categorization, Ordering, and Hot Spots as well as discuss how to manage item banks. You will have an opportunity to create questions in an item bank in one of your Canvas courses and utilize the item bank in a quiz. The workshop duration is 1.5 hours.

We will work together to explore Canvas features and best practices in course design. The workshop duration is 2 hours.

You’ll have the opportunity to customize your Canvas course ensuring that your courses are suited to your teaching style. We will work together to explore Canvas features and best practices in course design. The workshop duration is 2 hours.

Taking a proactive approach to modifying or creating accessible course content (images, documents, presentations, videos, etc.) can be helpful for both you and your students. A demonstration of key accessibility practices will take place during the workshop. Followed by time to practice a skill and ask questions. This workshop is only an introduction. You will leave with additional information and resources about accessible content creation. The workshop is 1.5 hours.

Are you looking for ways to make a lasting impact on students while engaging them with your course content? Join us to learn more about what micro-learning means and what it takes to create personalized micro-learning videos that will connect learners to your material. We will identify the benefits of producing micro-learning videos for your classes and discuss best practices for creating effective, accessible videos as well as exploring different platforms where you can host your videos. In this session, you will have the opportunity to create a script or outline for a topic from one of your courses to prepare for your first video! The workshop duration is 1 hour.

  • Discuss steps and best practices involved in creating micro-learning videos

In this workshop, you will learn how to design a student-friendly course in Canvas. Throughout the workshop, we will review the BGSU Canvas Course Template and discuss best practices for organizing your course content in Canvas. We will explore best-practices for course design and discuss design options that align with your pedagogy and course content. We will also discuss BGSU student feedback about course design and share strategies that have worked well for BGSU instructors. The workshop duration is 1 hour.

Are you an instructor looking to enhance the courses you’re teaching using video content and looking for a quiet space to record? Join us for an immersive workshop where you'll learn how to utilize our video recording studio. Through hands-on experience you'll learn how to operate the video camera, lighting kit, and microphone, empowering you to deliver engaging and visually appealing instructional videos.

You'll have the opportunity to work directly with the equipment, experiment with different setups, and record a video session using the video recording studio. This workshop is open to instructors and staff. The workshop duration is 1 hour.

Are you looking for ways to create interactive videos to engage students in discussion and assessment? Canvas Studio is a screen capture tool that allows you to create engaging videos right within Canvas. The Studio interface allows for in-video commenting and low-stakes quizzing. The workshop duration is 2 hours.
