Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) at BGSU

What is interlibrary loan?

Interlibrary loan is a system of lending items to other libraries for the use of their patrons. You can request books, journal articles/book chapters, music scores, DVDs, and more, and we will find a library from which to borrow the item.

Is there anything I cannot request through ILL?

Before requesting a BOOK or MUSIC SCORE from ILL, please check the OhioLINK and SearchOhio catalog. If there is a copy available there, you can request it and it will be faster than interlibrary loan and save the library money.

Before requesting a THESIS or DISSERTATION, please check the ProQuest Theses and Dissertations database.

If you have any problems using either of these resources, please visit our Ask Us! Page to contact us via chat, email, or telephone.

How do I request an item?

The easiest way is to locate the item using Summon and find the link that says “Request a copy through Interlibrary Loan.” Clicking that link will take you to a request page that is pre-populated with the item’s information.

You can also log into the Interlibrary loan system and then click the “New Request” button at the top. Choose to request a book (the physical item will be mailed to Jerome library) or an article (for a single journal article or a book chapter, usually no more than 50 pages. It will be delivered electronically as a PDF file.) Fill in as much information as you have about the item.

How long does a request take?

Some requests will be received within 2 business days, but some can take up to two weeks. You will get an email when your item is received.

Is there a cost for the interlibrary loan service?

BGSU does not charge patrons. Some libraries charge BGSU for items they lend us. We do not pass that cost along to our students, faculty, or staff. We encourage you to request any item you need for your research or scholarship, but be mindful that the library may be charged for the item.

Is there a limit to how many items I can request?

In order to help everyone in a timely manner, patrons are limited to 15 requests per week.

Who do I contact if I have problems with or questions about interlibrary loans?

Jerome Library Interlibrary Loan

Will I be fined if my ILL item becomes overdue while I am waiting to find out if my renewal request has been approved?

No. However, if the renewal is not approved, you are expected to return the book to the library within 2 business days. The interlibrary loan system depends on all patrons being responsible users.
