Study Abroad

Qualified Asian Studies majors attend Nanzan University (Sept.-May), Saitama University (Oct.-July), and Hiroshima Jogakuin University (Oct.-July) under agreements between BGSU and the host institutions in Japan. The credits earned in Japan are transferred to BGSU and are counted toward graduation. The applicant must complete JAPN 1020 and one course with a component on Asian culture, society, or history and maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA to be eligible.

Summer Program

Dates: appx. 10 June - 10 July

Host institution: Nagoya Gakuin University, conveniently located in Nagoya City.

Academic credit: 6 credits for language and culture, typically in either JAPN 2000 or JAPN 3000.

Program participants attend Japanese language classes in the morning, Monday through Friday. Afternoon activities acquaint participants with Japanese society, intercultural communication, business, ceramics, calligraphy, sports, religion, and customs such as art and flower arrangement (Ikebana). There are a variety of field trips and excursions to shrines, museums, natural wonders, and other places.

Lodging: Participants live in the university dormitory of Nagoya Gakuin University.

Eligibility: The program is open to the students who have completed one year of college level Japanese language or demonstrate equivalent Japanese proficiency.

Semester or academic year abroad for Asian Studies majors

Nanzan University is located in Nagoya, Japan. Nanzan university admits one BGSU student every year. BGSU students pay round-trip airfare and room and board for two academic semesters at Nanzan University.

Saitama University is located in Saitama, Saitama Prefecture. Saitama University admits two students from BGSU every year. BGSU students pay round trip airfare and room and board. Students are eligible to apply for a Japanese government scholarship. Students reside in the dormitory for international students.

Hiroshima Jogakuin University is located in Hiroshima. HJU admits one female student every year from BGSU. The BGSU student pays for airfare and room and board.

Internship Program

Tokai Rubber Industries, Inc. in Komaki admits one student each year for a six-month program, from July to December. Komaki City is near Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture.
