Scholarships & Awards

A $1,000 award will be granted to an outstanding CS Senior undergraduate student in April each year. The Undergraduate Committee will solicit nominations by providing a list of qualified students to the faculty. Based on the nomination, the Committee will propose five or fewer candidates for the faculty to consider. One student will be selected by the faculty for the award.

To qualify for the award, at the time of the award consideration, the student must:

• Be a CS Senior undergraduate student currently enrolled at BGSU
• Have completed a minimum of 89 credit hours for their degree requirements

Selection will be based on:

• Strong academic achievement
• Leadership in the classroom
• Participation in computing-related and other extra-curricular activities
• Dedication to the computing profession

A $1,000 scholarship will be given in memory of Dr. Leland r. Miller by his family, friends, colleagues, and former students. (Dr. Miller was a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science at Bowling Green State University from 1971-2004). The scholarship will be given to a Computer Science major who will be a junior or a senior in the coming year and has at least two semesters of study remaining prior to graduation. The student should have completed at least 29 hours of credits and BGSU, should have an overall GPA of at least 3.00, should have a demonstrable financial need, and should show evidence of service to the community (Bowling Green, the student's home town, etc.).

A $1,000 scholarship will be given by Pete Sanderson (a BGSU Computer Science graduate - 1976 B.S. and 1977 M.S.) to a Computer Science major who will be a junior or a senior in the coming year, has a 3.5 (or better) overall GPA and a 3.5 (or better) GPA in computer science courses. Also considered are quality of participation in computing-related activities and in other extra-curricular activities.

A $2,000 scholarship (three scholarships in first year) will be given by Reni & Shantanu Narayen (a BGSU Computer Science graduate – 1986 M.S.) to an incoming, first-generation Computer Science/Software Engineering major who need financial need to provide them opportunities for higher education. The scholarship will be renewed as long as the recipient(s) continue to pursuing his/her degree in the Department of Computer Science.

At least one ($1,000-$2,000) scholarship will be given in memory of Shanon Wise Marks by her family and friends. (Shanon was a 1991 graduate of the Computer Science program at BGSU who was murdered on November 12, 1997). The scholarship will be given to one or more female Computer Science majors who will be a junior or a senior in the coming year and has at least two semesters of study remaining prior to graduation. Scholarship selection will be based on (1) academic achievement, (2) financial need, (3) evidence of leadership skills, and (4) professional potential.

To qualify for the award, at the time of the award consideration, the student must

• Be a CS graduate student currently enrolled at BGSU
• Have completed a minimum of 18 credit hours on their TDP (Tentative Degree Program) by the end of the current semester
• Have a 3.7 (or better) overall GPA
  

Selection will be based on

• Strong academic achievement
• Leadership in the classroom
• Dedication to the computing profession

Participation in computing-related and other extra-curricular activities

A $1,000 or $2,000 scholarship will be given by the Department of Computer Science to a Computer Science/Software Engineering major who will be a sophomore, junior or senior in the comparing year, has a minimum of 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is supported by the Terabyte and Petabyte members of the Agile Software Factory Corporate Member Program.

A $1,000 scholarship will be given in memory of Grace Hopper by Huntington National Bank in Columbus, Ohio. Grace Hopper was a U.S. Navy Rear Admiral who died in 1992 and was best known for the development of the COBOL programming language, the terms "bug" and "nanosecond", etc. The scholarship will be given to a Computer Science major who will graduate in the current year (but not in current semester) and has demonstrated strong academic performance, leadership in the classroom, and dedication to the computing profession.

A $1,000 scholarship will be given by Marathon Petroleum Company. The scholarship will be given to a Computer Science undergraduate major pursuing a degree with the intent of working in the energy industry. The student must have a GPA of 3.0 or above, be eligible to work full time in the US upon graduation and have work authorization for an internship in the US prior to graduation (this criteria met by any of the following: US Citizenship, Green Card, H-1B visa or F-1/F-3 with OPT approval).
