Mandatory Academic Advising Appointments
We highly recommend you reach out to your Academic Advisor and Planner or assigned faculty member, no matter your class standing, prior to scheduling your classes – but if you are a first-time new student or transfer student this semester at BGSU, you will be REQUIRED to meet with your Academic Advisor and Planner prior to registering your classes. If you attempt to register for classes prior to meeting this requirement, you will see a hold on your account.
It is also important for you to know that you are responsible for scheduling your classes. Meeting with an advisor does not mean your classes have been scheduled. Your advisor will go over any questions you have, your class options and help you understand what courses are required for graduation, but they will not schedule your classes for you. Please review the information listed below to learn more about advising and to book your appointment.
Am I required to meet with my advisor before registering for classes?
It is highly recommend that you connect with your Academic Advisor and Planner or assigned faculty member before you register for classes each semester – but the only students who will have a registration hold on their account until a meeting has taken place are new, first-time and transfer students as described below:
Required:
- First-time new BGSU students this academic year. This requirement is placed on fall and spring enrollment.
- College Credit Plus (CCP) Students
- New transfer students*
Not Required:
- All returning students
Why are new, first-time and transfer students required to meet with an advisor?
The mandatory academic advising requirement is designed to help you establish a meaningful, working relationship with your Academic Advisor and Planner; who will help you become familiar with policies, procedures and degree programs and requirements early in your academic journey at BGSU.
The more informed you are, the more likely you will make good decisions about appropriate course loads and course selections.
