Conference to provide forum for sustainability

BOWLING GREEN, O—From the food we eat to the buildings we build and the ways in which we teach, the concept of sustainability permeates our lives but is not always a conscious part of our education.

An upcoming conference at Bowling Green State University will provide regional educators and students an opportunity to share their ideas on teaching and modeling a more supportable approach to life. “Perspectives on Sustainability: Collaboration in Higher Education in Northwest Ohio” will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 20 in 206 and 228 Bowen-Thompson Student Union.

Organized by BGSU, the University of Toledo and other area colleges and universities, the day will focus on the themes of university and student initiatives, teaching sustainability, sustainability in the classroom and sustainability research.

Following welcome addresses by BGSU President Carol Cartwright and UT President Lloyd Jacobs, the day will feature sessions on Midwestern culture and food and the role of documentary films in the sustainable food movement, the ethics of sustainability, getting students involved in “go-green” projects, using local resources to teach sustainability, technological innovations, and more.

Preregistration is over and the local-food luncheon is sold out. However, plenty of space is available for the seminar and poster sessions, and attendees many register free at the door. Food is available for purchase in the Union.
