Novel coronavirus (COVID-19)
March 30, 2020
The rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation has had a tremendous financial impact on our students, their families and the University. While it is too early to measure its effect on Ohio, the nation and world, we recognize the uncertainty that BGSU students and families are facing and want to ensure that we are providing an emergency grant equaling a refund to students whose housing, dining and parking have been disrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
We want to provide a fair, equitable amount of support to each student and their family, so BGSU has chosen to absorb the fixed costs associated with housing, dining, and parking that have already been incurred for the entire semester. Regarding tuition and fees, students are being provided online courses, virtual advising and coaching so that they can continue their academic career, along with a virtual experience of student activities. These courses are for credit and these support services are being provided by our qualified and dedicated faculty and staff. Given that, no adjustments will be made for tuition and fees for this semester.
Since the announcement of the transition to online learning, we shared that credits/refunds for your housing, dining and parking plans were a priority. We have received guidance from the U.S. Department of Education and have now finalized a model that will not interfere with any student’s current financial aid. Please note that each student's emergency grant representing a refund will be individually calculated to ensure fairness. The grant will be based upon the number of remaining nights in their specific residence hall, starting March 19, the amount of dining swipes that were unused and the number of days remaining of unused parking.
Any student with unused Falcon Dollars will receive an additional email providing them with more specific information regarding roll forwards and/or refunds of the unused amount.
Please note, if a University-provided scholarship was applied to all or part of your housing, dining or parking plans, your refund will be reduced by that amount. In addition, if you have a remaining balance for previous costs incurred this semester, your grant will first be applied against the prior balance.
Students eligible for a refund will receive an email that will provide them with their specific refund amounts, which will be posted to your student account within 48 hours, and you can expect a refund check or direct bank transfer (via ACH) within 10-14 days.
Students enrolled in a payment plan should wait until after the April 1 credits have been applied to their account before making additional installments.
If you have any questions regarding your appropriate credit/refund, please contact:
We want to thank you for your understanding. It is not lost on us how important this credit/refund is to you and we appreciate your flexibility as we worked through this process. We hope you will be able to continue to focus and learn during this period so that you can achieve your academic goals. We also encourage you to visit the BGSU Keep Learning website for resources for online learning and the Virtual Engagement website for access to student life and opportunities to stay connected to BGSU while at home. We will continue to update you regarding our decisions in response to the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation.
