2024 Shanklin Colloquium

Charles E. Shanklin Award for Research Excellence will have a 1st place award of $1,250.00 and a runner-up award of $750.00 in each of the following divisions – i) Arts and Humanities, ii) Social and Behavioral Sciences, and iii) Sciences and Mathematics. Original research sole authored by graduate students are eligible. If you wish to submit a co-authored paper, the additional authors will be required to submit a co-author form, stating they waive their rights to any prize money received. These need to be full research papers and any identifying information of the author should be removed. If the papers are not anonymized, they stand disqualified. The research papers will be sent to judges (faculty) and top two papers from each division will be selected for final presentation to determine the 1st and 2nd place, respectively. The final presentation will be on April 1th, 2024. Itinerary will soon follow after preliminary round of judging.  

The research paper should be 12 pt font, double spaced, and one-inch margin on all sides. No more than 30 pages (excluding references, figures, and tables). The submissions should be anonymized.

Nominees are responsible for creating and printing their poster for the Colloquium.

The Graduate Student Senate (GSS) as a part of the Shanklin Colloquium is hosting the second Creative Expression Contest. The Creative Expression Contest will highlight original graduate student research and will have a 1st place award of $250 and a runner-up award of $75.00 in each of the following divisions:

• Performative Arts (e.g., rap, poetry, acting, singing, dancing, opera, theater, magic or illusion performances, mime, spoken word, and recitation)
• Visual Arts (e.g., painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video, filmmaking, design, and crafts)

All BGSU graduate students are encouraged to submit. Original research sole-authored by graduate students are eligible. The Statement of Work and Videos (please see below) presentation submissions will be sent to judges (faculty) and the top two submissions from each division will be ranked to determine the 1st and 2nd place, respectively. Judging Process and Awards:

A subcommittee of BGSU faculty will select the two graduate student prizewinners in each category (performative arts and visual arts).  Winners will be notified after the selection process is complete.  

Guidelines for Submissions:

The research or creative project must:

• Indicate which category, performative or visual arts
• Be composed by a BGSU graduate student and be solely the work of the author(s).
• Include a “Statement of Work” that contains citations. The suggested length is 1 – 3 pages and conforms to research documentation guidelines such as MLA, Chicago, or APA.
• Submissions will also include a short (1-2 minute) summary video of the work for public display online at our “Virtual Symposium” on the GSS Canvas Shell. This video must include voice narration (can be any voice) and be captioned (to be accessible). Your name and image do not need to be included on this portion of the submission (but can be included if you want). This video should 1) explain where idea for project came from, 2) what the project is, 3) major findings (as relevant), 4) explain why the project is important (e.g., what goals does it address), and 5) include a visual sample as appropriate.
