‘Philosophy and Medicine’ topic of graduate conference

Philosophy graduate students from around the nation will converge on the University this weekend for the second Graduate Student Workshop in Applied Philosophy. Organized entirely by BGSU graduate students, the conference theme this year is Philosophy and Medicine. The topics focus on issues confronting medical professionals and consumers today.

Sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 8) and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 9) in 207 Bowen-Thompson Student Union.

Presenting the keynote address will be Dr. Rosamund Rhodes, a professor of medicinal education at the CUNY Graduate Center and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, speaking on “Understanding Autonomy: Insights from Living Organ Donors.”

Jonathan Beever, of Rock Ethics Institute, will give a plenary session on the role of the individual in biomedicine.

All the other speakers are graduate students. Their topics range from why alcoholics should have to compete equally for liver transplants to when religious parents can deny children health care.
