Bachelor of Science (B.S.)/Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)
Biology: Marine and Aquatic Biology
BGSU is recognized as one of the best marine biology colleges in the Midwest, in part because we offer a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in the field. You can choose the path that best matches your interests, strengths and long-term goals.
A bachelor’s degree in biology with a specialization in marine and aquatic biology is ideal for those with a curious mind, adventurous spirit and a heart to explore and protect the waters that cover 70% of Earth’s surface.
BGSU – located in the Great Lakes region of Northwest Ohio – is a perfect location for field studies of aquatic organisms, their behavior and interactions in marine and freshwater environments.
Oceans and freshwater ecosystems are the lifeblood of our planet, supplying food, oxygen and climate regulation. Both are under threat due to pollution, overfishing and climate change. The vital work of aquatic and marine biologists helps ensure these environments thrive for generations to come.
Why study marine and aquatic biology at BGSU in Ohio?
- State-of-the-art learning facilities. Most marine and aquatic biology courses are taught in the Life Sciences Building which contains 40+ laboratories, including a Marine Biology Lab.
- Outstanding faculty. BGSU biological sciences faculty generates 50 peer-reviewed biology research publications and more than $1 million in external grants each year.
- Undergraduate research opportunities. Unlike other universities, BGSU welcomes undergraduate biology majors in the marine and aquatic specialization to participate in exciting research projects and field learning experiences. Past field studies have included:
- Reef fish surveys in Curaçao
- Travel to Lake Balaton, Hungary with the Balaton Limnological Institute
- Excursions with the Canadian Coast Guard in Lake Erie
- Hands-on learning. BGSU is affiliated with the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory. Our students are encouraged to enroll in one or more of the lab’s specialized summer session field classes, such as:
- Shark biology
- Marine ichthyology
- Marine mammals
- Dolphin and whale behavior
- Small class size. Class sizes are kept small to enable more 1:1 instruction and mentorship opportunities.
- Close colleague connections. The BGSU Alpha Beta chapter of Tri-Beta (Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society) connects biological sciences students through research symposiums, nature walks, local science fairs, independent research projects, guest lectures, internship panels and tutoring services.
The median annual wage for environmental scientists is 23% higher than the national average for all occupations.

Bachelor of Science vs. Bachelor of Arts
BGSU is recognized as one of the top marine biology colleges in the Midwest in part because you have the option of either a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) to tailor your studies more closely to your career goals. The difference between the two options lies primarily in the focus of the coursework and academic approach.
The B.S. in biology with marine and aquatic biology specialization tends to emphasize the technical aspects of the field, with more in-depth courses in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and other natural sciences.
It’s geared toward students aiming for careers in scientific research or technical careers in marine biology. Expect more rigorous coursework in areas like marine ecology, oceanography, biochemistry and advanced mathematics.
Marine and aquatic biology graduates with a B.S. are often prepared for careers in research, environmental consulting, fisheries management or marine conservation. Or they pursue advanced degrees.
A B.A. in biology with marine and aquatic biology specialization offers a broader, more interdisciplinary approach. You’re still studying marine biology and related sciences, but the coursework includes more liberal arts electives, such as environmental policy, communications and social sciences.
This track is ideal for students drawn toward the human dimensions of marine biology, such as policy, education and conservation advocacy and outreach.
Both degrees lead to rewarding careers. Choose the one that best aligns with your interests, strengths and career goals.
The bachelor’s degree in biology with a marine and aquatic biology specialization is part of the Department of Biological Sciences in the BGSU College of Arts and Sciences.
