Life Design at BGSU: Inside the Michael and Sara Kuhlin Hub for Career Design and Connections
The Michael and Sara Kuhlin Hub for Career Design and Connections, on the second floor of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union, is a key component of Life Design at BGSU, aimed at helping students align their interests with future career opportunities. The Kuhlin Hub is focused on expanding the University’s external partnerships and facilitating connections between students and industry professionals that lead to mentorship, co-ops, internships and fulfilling career opportunities.
Executive Director Steve Russell delivered his remarks during a reception celebrating the Michael and Sara Kuhlin Hub for Career Design and Connections, signifying Bowling Green State University’s continued commitment to redefining student success through Life Design at BGSU.
The Kuhlin Hub is now one unit that encompasses three key components, two of which have been helping students connect with employers for years – the Career Center and Student Employment Services. A third group has been added that focuses on outreach directly to employers.
Within the Life Design program, students receive support and coaching to succeed in all facets of life, in addition to their academic classes. The program – which is designed for students of all backgrounds, ability levels and majors – equips students to better understand the why behind their academic journey and the how behind living a balanced life.

In the Life Design model, students are encouraged to explore various hypotheses regarding their interests, preferences and career goals. Life Design coaches help to develop those hypotheses and then students come to the Kuhlin Hub to test them. If the test is positive the student can continue testing it with assistance from the Kuhlin Hub. If the experience does not deliver as expected, the student returns to the Life Design coach to rethink the hypothesis and explore alternatives.
