Exploring What’s Next with Recent MA Graduates
In May the MA in Literary and Textual Studies program celebrated the graduation of seven remarkable students. Now members of a successful, wide-ranging alumni family, each one is embarking on the next stage of their careers, and we couldn’t be more proud. In our effort to continue celebrating this achievement, we checked in with some of the recent graduates about what’s next, now that school is out.
Madelaine Pope
On April 5, I successfully defended my thesis - "Discipline and Surveillance of Non-Docile Heroines in Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South and 'The Poor Clare' and Serhidan Le Fanu's The Rose and the Key.” I have been accepted into the University of Kentucky's PhD program in English, and while there I plan to continue my studies on 19th-century British literature, women writers, and women's studies.
In July, my husband and I will be moving to Winchester, KY so we can get settled in before school starts. In August, I will have a week of TA training so I can teach classes for the Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Studies (WRD) department, as well as orientations for the English department and graduate college. Then, at the end of August, I will begin the first year of my PhD program and teach two sections of first-year composition for WRD. Before school starts, though, I plan on spending as much time reading, snuggling with my dog, and exploring new fun places with my husband as possible.
Blue Profitt
I will begin my doctoral studies in English and Cinema Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in Fall 2019. Currently, I am in talks to become an adjunct lecturer of English at Milwaukee Area Technical College. I am working to condense the themes in my master's thesis, about rejecting the Oedipal complex in psychoanalysis by focusing on narcissism, into an article. I have also begun to outline a project about male hysteria, the female gaze, and the 1980s "greaser film," which I hope to develop into a dissertation at UWM.
Adam Wagner
Post-graduation, I was able to get a position at Owens Community College here in Northwest Ohio. I love the area and wanted to stay local to invest in the community around here. I now work as an Academic Advisor here at Owens - helping students plan their semesters, register for classes, linking them to available resources, etc. Currently I’m the advisor for Business / STEM related degrees and certificates, which shows how transferable our skills in English can be! I’ve been growing a passion for community colleges and their distinct and important role in higher education today. I hope to stay here for awhile and maybe do some adjuncting while I consider pursuing a PhD.
We are so proud of each and every one of our graduates and wish them all the greatest success in their new programs and professional positions.
