After participating in a construction management co-op, Kelly succeeded in landing that job before graduation.

The BGSU mission is to prepare students for lifelong career growth and the college supports that mission by encouraging experiential learning opportunities through mandatory co-op requirements.

She earned her master’s degree in interpersonal communication and doctoral degree in communication studies from BGSU in 1989 and 2000, respectively.

They remain close to this day, getting together for regular reunions that are usually scheduled in conjunction with a Falcon football game.

  • 'Keep Your Airspeed Up' Nov 28, 2017 11:30 AM Dr. Marsha Bordner, BGSU alumna and president emerita of Terra State Community College, has captured the remarkable career of her husband, Harold Brown, in “Keep Your Airspeed Up: The Story of a Tuskegee Airman.” Brown, 93, served his country in the military and later expanded opportunities for Ohio college students.

  • Alumnus’ vision for Detroit is 20/20 Nov 19, 2017 12:15 AM Bowling Green State University alumnus Michael Swafford, a Detroit native, returned home after graduation, primarily because that’s where his support system was. But he quickly found a place giving back to the community he loves, both through personal efforts and through GM2020, which has a strong community service component.

  • BGSU 'Give Back. Go Forward.' program Nov 12, 2017 12:00 AM BGSU, with the Ohio Department of Higher Education, has launched “Give Back. Go Forward.” to support BGSU’s Vital Communities Initiative. This program provides community members age 60-plus the opportunity to volunteer at least 100 hours and receive a three-hour tuition voucher — for personal use or to give as a gift to an individual enrolled or planning to enroll at BGSU.

The chairman and managing director of Riverpoint Capital Management also was ranked by Barron's as the No. 14 independent investment advisor in the nation.

  • A taste for helping others Oct 27, 2017 3:30 PM Matthew Hohler ’16 took an unconventional career route with his master’s degree in public health degree from BGSU. He helped form Levanta Coffee, now known as Farmers First Coffee Co., which set out to improve the lives of impoverished coffee farmers in Peru and Honduras by bypassing the middlemen to increase coffee growers’ profits by 50 percent.

  • BGSU premieres Changing Lives for the World Campaign Oct 16, 2017 12:15 AM More than 350 guests attended the premiere of BGSU’s Changing Lives for the World comprehensive campaign Oct. 13. The special event highlighted four campaign priorities: scholarships to support students in all majors, endowed faculty and staff positions to recruit and retain outstanding educators and coaches, creating state-of-the-art facilities and named academic programs and units.

The BGSU Board of Trustees elected Trustee Megan Newlove of Bowling Green the chair of the board and Trustee Daniel Keller of Huron, Ohio, vice chair for 2017-18.

  • Life of activism got its start on campus Feb 8, 2017 2:37 PM Nick Licata, a 1969 political science graduate, helped launch the SDS chapter on campus and then led the student body before his post-graduate work took him to Seattle where he was a progressive member of the city council for 18 years. Licata helped push through legislation related to paid sick leave, the minimum wage, and fair housing. He has released a book titled: “Becoming a Citizen Activist”.

  • The music man Jan 9, 2017 10:23 AM Through his careful curation, donor management and subject expertise, BGSU’s Music Library and Sound Recordings Archives have come to reflect his expertise and knowledge. Bill Schurk, who retired at the end of December, has given generously with in-kind and cash gifts totaling more than $460,000 to help to expand the Archive’s focus. As a result, the Archive is -- in many people’s eyes -- synonymous with him.
