Virtual Symposium

Welcome to the Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) Virtual Student Symposium! This page features links to short, one- to two-minute, accessible videos created by undergraduate and graduate students at BGSU. The videos summarize the student’s research or creative work that explores the diversity of women’s experiences. YOU, the public, are invited to watch the videos and post comments and questions as desired then vote on your favorite entry for the People’s Choice Public Scholarship Award, a $300 grand prize given to the top undergraduate and graduate student entry!

The winners for all the awards will be announced at the WGSS Symposium Keynote address with Dr. Elizabeth Pellerito on March 24 at 4:30 p.m.  The Symposium Awards and Keynote will be both in-person (BTSU 207) and on zoom! Please register for the Symposium and Awards to receive the zoom invitation and reminders.    REGISTER HERE

Background

The Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program’s annual Symposium features research and creative work from undergraduate and graduate students at BGSU. This year, students will submit their project for judging by a panel of faculty for our cash prizes (1st place is $150, 2nd place is $100 and 3rd place $75) in each category (research and creative). Students will ALSO submit a one- to two-minute video summary of their research to post on our Virtual Symposium space. The public is invited to view the videos, and post comments and questions as desired, and then vote on their favorite research or creative piece. The undergraduate and graduate student winners of the public vote will win the $300 grand prize: The People’s Choice Public Scholarship Award!

Before you place your vote for the People’s Choice Public Scholarship Award, please take the time to watch each video in that category (e.g., each undergraduate student video or each graduate student video) so you can make the best possible choice. You will only be allowed to vote once per category. Please also feel free to leave the student a comment using the YouTube comment feature. Comments are moderated, but once approved, they are released publically for the student to see and interact with.

Thanks to a generous donation from The Center for Undergraduate Research, we have increased the prize money for the Undergraduate Contest. The First Place Prize for Undergraduate Research is $250 and the First Place Prize for Undergraduate Creative Project is $250.

Voting will begin on March 17th and end at noon on March 24. The winners will be announced at the Symposium Keynote at 4:30 p.m. on March 24. Questions about voting can be sent to Dr. Sarah Rainey-Smithback, Director of WGSS, at sasarah@bgsu.edu
