Paying for College: Tax Benefits and Savings Options
Bowling Green State University is required to provide a 1098-T document to all registered students with a valid social security number and eligible educational expenses within the prior calendar year. Eligible students may elect to receive this form electronically.
Here's how to elect to receive your 1098-T electronically:
- Log into MyBGSU
- Select Student Center
- Select To Do List
- Select Authorization for Electronic 1098T
There are two tax credits-the American Opportunity and the Lifetime Learning Credits-which may help families reduce out-of-pocket expenses for tuition and related fees.
- The American Opportunity Credit-you may be able to claim up to $2,500.00 for qualified educational expenses paid for each eligible student.
- The Lifetime Learning Credit-you may be able to claim up to $2,000 for qualified education expenses paid for each eligible student. there is no limit on the number of years the Lifetime Learning Credit can be claimed for each student.
Who qualifies for these credits and what are the income limitations?
The university cannot determine whether a student qualifies for one of these tax credits, or what the dollar amount of the credit will be. It is highly advised that one consult a professional tax advisor.
