“Teacher of the Month” Pursues Graduate Studies in History
Graduate student Maureen O’Connell was recently profiled as “Teacher of the Month” by the Toledo Blade. The newspaper highlights area teachers who demonstrate outstanding qualities that enrich the lives of their students. O’Connell earned her bachelor’s degree in education (Integrated Social Studies) from BGSU and her master’s degree in school counseling from the University of Toledo.
She is currently taking graduate courses with the BGSU Department of History to gain credentials to teach College Credit Plus courses in history.
Having been out of college for several years, O’Connell finds the courses rigorous yet highly enjoyable. “It’s a new way of thinking,” she said, referring to historiography, or the history of writing. She considers it to be “a new tool to add to my belt.”
Regarding longer-term goals, she says, “I might be interested in pursuing my Ph.D., but I am not sure yet. I kind of like not knowing where I may end up!”
Maureen teaches at Waite High School in Toledo. She is also the school’s social studies department chair and assistant athletic director.
