Section 2.2
Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning Committee
Representatives to the Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning Committee are, at the request of the Arts and Sciences Council, elected through procedures specified within the departments/schools to serve three-year terms.
Functions
- To review curriculum modifications and new course proposals from department or program units within the College. If approval is recommended, the appropriate modification proposal forms are forwarded to the Dean; if the modifications are not approved, the forms are returned to the department/program unit for revision.
- To act on student appeals to waive or substitute courses within that portion of the College requirements which might be considered under the "jurisdiction" of each respective divisional subcommittee.
- To create a regular, cross-disciplinary forum for conversations about teaching and learning.
- To make appropriate recommendations to the Dean regarding instructional and curricular improvement.
- To strengthen shared sense of the mission of liberal education.
Membership and Executive Structure
The committee’s membership encompasses all departments and schools in the College, as well as the three interdisciplinary major programs not directly affiliated with a school or department (AFRS, ASIA, INST). The School of Cultural & Critical Studies elects one social sciences and one arts & humanities domain representative, and the School of Earth Environment & Society elects one social sciences and one natural sciences domain representative. The College of Musical Arts, whose offerings form the core of the BA in Music, elect a representative to the arts and humanities domain. The Department of Economics in the College of Business, whose offerings form the core of the BA in Economics, elects one representative to the social sciences domain. The total voting membership is 24. Non-voting members include Arts and Sciences associate deans whose portfolios include curriculum and academic advisors who serve students in Arts and Sciences programs.
Subcommittee for the Arts and Humanities
Voting members include one representative from each of the following: the School of Art, the School of Cultural and Critical Studies; the Departments of English, World Languages and Cultures, Philosophy, Theatre and Film; and the College of Musical Arts.
Subcommittee for the Social Sciences
Voting members include one representative from each of the following: the School of Media and Communication, the School of Cultural and Critical Studies, the School of Earth, Environment, and Society; and the Departments of Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.
Subcommittee for Mathematics and the Natural and Physical Sciences
Voting members include one representative from each of the following: the School of Earth, Environment, and Society; and the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics and Astronomy.
For interdisciplinary proposals, each applicable domain subcommittee elects two representatives to join the interdisciplinary program representatives on an ad hoc interdisciplinary subcommittee.
The three domain subcommittee chairs form the executive committee of the CTLC. The chair rotates annually, following the sequence: Arts and Humanities, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Social Sciences. At the final CTLC meeting of a given academic year, each subcommittee elects a continuing member to serve as subcommittee chair and CTLC executive committee member for the following academic year. If any subcommittee chair becomes unable to serve during an academic year, the affected subcommittee holds an ad hoc election to choose a chair, who then also takes the domain’s position on the CTLC executive committee.
Deliberation
The committee employs two-tier deliberation, including discussion by full CTLC and voting by subcommittee, on curriculum modification proposals that fall within a disciplinary domain or an interdisciplinary area.
CTLC deliberates and votes as a whole on matters of interest to the entire college. Full CTLC and subcommittee deliberations and votes are summarized in CTLC minutes.
Further rules and procedures are established in the CTLC Standing Rules and Parliamentary Procedures document.
