Dorothy Bryan: The Chemo Paintings

April 12 through April 29, 2013

Where: Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery Foyer

Dorothy Bryan made a difference. She tried to make every community in which she lived or that she touched a better place. When she triumphed over a cancer diagnosis, she shared her story with fellow cancer patients across the nation. She supported the arts with her time, money and enthusiasm, getting actively involved to create lasting contributions.

The artist's most recognized works, showcased in this exhibition, were created as she dealt with the physical and emotional trauma of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in 1989. A first catalog of this series was published in 1991 and the paintings were exhibited widely. Her story later became the subject of a profoundly moving and award-winning documentary. Produced and directed by Shawn Brady of WBGU-TV, the program was seen on more than sixty PBS stations nationwide. According to the introduction in that first catalogue, she saw this series of paintings “as an inspiration and a hope for fellow victims and as a dedication to everyone who is helping fight cancer in all its forms.”

We are honored to display these paintings at BGSU as they make their way from a showing at the Toledo Museum of Art to their permanent home in the new Dana Cancer Center.

Dorothy Uber Bryan was a kind, generous and thoughtful woman, who finally succumbed to cancer in 2001.  Her charm and warm smile are captured in the portrait of Ashel and Dorothy, commissioned by the University’s Foundation and created by Toledo artist Leslie Adams, which is on display in the Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery.  She is remembered by many with gratitude and appreciation for her remarkable achievements and gifts.

Labors of Love

January 15 through February 16, 2013

Where: Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery Foyer

This collection of posters were created out of the pleasure of making by BGSU Graphic Design Alumni from 1992-2012. Made from special love, each creator either silk-screened it, handmade it, labored over it for months, or just downright loved its outcome. Enjoy.
