Curriculum

The MA in European Studies requires a total of 30 graduate-level credit hours of coursework. Students may specialize in European Arts & Letters, European Political Economy, Regional Focus (France, Germany & Austria, Russia or Spain) and other European Languages (Italian, Russian, Slovenia) in combination with an arts and science or political-economic specialization.

There are 9 hours of required courses, a minimum of 12 elective courses, 6 hours (2 courses) of European languages at the 3rd year or above level, and a 3 hour (minimum) capstone experience of a thesis or comprehensive reading.

Admissions

To gain regular status admission, applicants must have a minimum 2.75 undergraduate cumulative GPA from a regionally accredited institution. Applicants with below a 2.75 may be considered for conditional admission status. Applicants are required to submit scanned copies of official or unofficial transcripts from all institutions attended. Upon admission, final official or notarized copies of transcripts from all institutions where degrees were earned and diplomas from international institutions must be submitted. Applicants are also required to submit official scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

All applicants must submit a 2-3 page statement of purpose outlining their experience within the field of European Studies, their professional goals, and the research interests they wish to pursue. Three letters of recommendation from individuals with knowledge of the applicant’s qualifications and ability to successfully complete graduate study are also required.

International applicants are also required to submit scores from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTEA), or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Successful completion of ELS 112 will also be accepted for this requirement.

Upon completion of the MA in European Studies, graduates:

Will know how to interact in professional contexts with Europeans and analyze and solve real-life professional problems collaboratively in an international setting.

Will have the opportunity to attain advanced proficiency in a European Language other than English.

Gainful Employment

The European Studies program is not a recognized occupation that requires a Gainful Employment disclosure.
