Frequently Asked Questions
Q. | What should I do if I'm having computer or technical trouble with this site?
A. | If you are having technical difficulty with this site (for example, the page does not load properly), feel free to call or live chat with us. Our number is 419-372-0999 or use live chat.
Q. | Is it okay for me to get help while writing this essay?
A. | Do not obtain any form of assistance while taking the Writing Placement. This includes consulting with a teacher, parent, or friend for proofreading or editing your written essay. It is imperative that you honor this important part of the placement guidelines. It is to your disadvantage to receive a score higher than your actual abilities. A score that is too high would place you in a course beyond your capabilities with a limited probability of success.
Q. | May I write my essay using a word-processor and then cut-and-paste it into the submission window?
A. | Yes, this approach is strongly recommended. You have two options. You may write your essay by using your own word processing software or by writing directly into the text box that appears on the "Write and Submit" webpage. The following information may help you decide. OPTION 1: USING YOUR OWN WORD PROCESSING SOFTWARE (Strongly Recommended) If you choose to write your essay using your own word processing program (for example, Word), you will be able to leave the placement site and return to it as often as you like within your 24-hour submission window. As you write your essay, remember to save your work to your own disk frequently. Use the cut-and-paste function to transfer your essay from your word processor to the large text box on the "Write and Submit" webpage. OPTION 2: TYPING DIRECTLY INTO THE TEXT BOX If you choose to type your essay directly into the large text box on the "Write and Submit" webpage, please be aware that the program will not save your work if you leave the webpage unless you click the "Save" button. Therefore, if you choose to leave the placement site and later return to it, you must be sure to click the "Save" button so you can pick up where you left off. Draft a revision plan for your placement essay. We understand that any timed writing experience presents limitations in terms of how much text one drafts, how deeply one engages revision and editing, and even the opportunity to conduct research about what others have to contribute to the topic. The goal of the revision plan, then, is for you to describe what you would do differently--or how you might continue to develop and/or polish the essay--if you had more time. Draft a narrative description of how you would go about continuing to develop and further strengthen the essay if time were not a limitation (150-200 words). |
|
Q. | How long do I have to complete the writing placement?
A. | The placement is imagined to take no more than two hours to complete, although you will actually have a 24-hour window within which to draft your essay and revision plan and submit a completed survey. The 24-hour period will begin when you first access the site and will end 24 hours later. You may access the site an unlimited number of times within the 24-hour period, and you may submit your placement at any point within the same 24-hour period. When the 24-hour window ends, however, you will no longer be able to submit work. |
|
Q. | How long should my essay be?
A. | Your essay should have a maximum of 800 words, and it could certainly be shorter.
Q. | When will I get the results of my placement?
A. | Your placement results will be available to you when you meet with your academic advisor during Student Orientation and Registration (SOAR). Students enrolled in the College Credit Plus Program will receive an email once the student's essay has been reviewed.
Q. | When should I take my writing placement?
A. | We encourage incoming students to complete the writing placement as soon as possible or no later than two weeks before your scheduled orientation date. The University Writing Program online placement is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Q. | Might I be exempt from completing the online placement?
A. | This placement is required of all incoming students, except students who know they have scored a 3 or above on the Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and Composition Test or English Literature and Composition Test,.
Q. | English is not my first language. Should I take the UWP placement? |
|
A. | Yes. Contact esolprog@bgsu.edu if you have any questions. |
