Cognate Areas
To complement the skills developed in the core courses, you will select cognate courses that add to your area of technical specialization. Unlike a minor, cognate classes can be chosen from a variety of areas, so you are free to pick classes that interest you most.
Some popular cognate areas include:
- Visual Communication Technology
- Marketing
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Computer Science
- Environmental Studies
- Physics
- Organizational Psychology
- Sociology
- Business-related Studies
- Law-related Studies
- Journalism-related Studies
- Technology-related Studies
Majors must complete 18 credit hours in their cognate area and minors must complete 6–9 hours. The Director of S&TC Programs will assist you in selecting your coursework.
After you and the Director of S&TC Programs agree on cognate courses, you will submit a cognate proposal with a list of courses to be taken to the College of Arts and Sciences for approval.
