AI + X Gives Students Flexibility to Shape Their Futures

That philosophy is at the heart of BGSU’s new AI + X degree*, a program that pairs artificial intelligence with another discipline, so students graduate with both technical fluency and the ability to apply it in meaningful ways.

Students can choose from six disciplines—mathematics, data science, physics, digital humanities, journalism, or public relations. (The discipline options will be expanded soon.) Each path reflects how AI can be adapted to fit different domains.

We don’t expect every student to become an AI scientist. We expect them to become professionals who understand AI well enough to apply it intelligently in their field.”
-- Dr. Jake  Lee, chair Computer Science

A physics or math student might use AI to model complex systems or analyze large-scale data, while a journalism student could learn how AI tools help with fact-checking and combating misinformation. In public relations, AI becomes a way to understand audiences and shape effective campaigns. The same technology looks different in each context, and that’s the program’s strength.

The AI + X degree is intentionally interdisciplinary. Instead of producing narrowly focused AI specialists, it prepares graduates who can translate the language of AI into the language of their chosen field. That means not only knowing how the technology works, but also how it should be used responsibly and thoughtfully.

ai x2“AI by itself is powerful,” Dr. Lee explains. “But AI in the hands of someone who knows how to connect it to history, communication, or science—that’s where the real transformation happens.”

For students, the program offers something distinct: a chance to see AI not as an isolated skillset, but as a flexible tool that travels with them into whatever career they choose. It’s not just about building algorithms—it’s about building professionals who can bridge boundaries and carry AI into boardrooms, newsrooms, labs, or classrooms, making it relevant and impactful wherever they go.
