Promotion and Tenure Review Committee (PTRC) Membership

Arts & Sciences Council

Revised: November 22, 2024

  • Size, Divisional Representation, and Terms
    • Nine members, elected by all full-time faculty.
    • Three members at the rank of Professor, three at the rank of Associate Professor, and three at the rank of QRF-Associate Professor or QRF-Professor, with one from each rank cohort representing each Arts & Sciences domain (i.e., Arts & Humanities, Mathematics & Natural Sciences, Social Sciences)
    • These members will serve two-year terms.
  • The chair of the PTRC is elected on an annual basis. All ranks are eligible to serve as chair. PTRC as a whole annually elects the chair from among those who have served at least one year in the committee.

  • The Office of the Dean will identify BUFMs eligible for election and send an open call for nominations, including self-nominations. Eligible BUFMs will self-select and confirm that they are willing to serve the full two-year term on PTRC and that they will not be submitting a dossier for review during the two-year term that they serve on PTRC. All full-time faculty in the college are eligible to vote on all nominees. The following restrictions to candidate eligibility apply:
    • PTRC members must be Bargaining Unit Faculty Members.
    • No probationary faculty, QRF Assistant Professors, or Faculty Administrators (FADs) are eligible to stand for election as a representative to the PTRC. Faculty members whose primary unit of appointment is outside the College of Arts and Sciences are also ineligible for PTRC membership.
    • Individuals may serve up to two successive terms.
    • The PTRC may have more than one member from the same academic unit.
  • The election ballot presents the complete slate of nominees for each position clearly indicating the candidate’s rank and unit of appointment. The voter selects one nominee per domain-rank intersection.
    • For each position, the candidate with the highest vote count is elected as member.
    • In case of an unforeseen resignation, a runner up from the same election results will be selected as a replacement for the remainder of the term.
  • To allow for staggered terms, members will be elected as follows:
    • Even Years
      • Professor, Arts & Humanities
      • Professor, Math & Natural Sciences
      • Associate Professor, Social Sciences
      • Associate Teaching Professor/Teaching Professor, Arts & Humanities
