BGSU Trombone Choir has been invited to perform at the 2026 American Trombone Workshop Dec 1, 2025 12:38 PM The BGSU Trombone Choir has been invited to perform at the 2026 American Trombone Workshop, hosted by the United States Army Band "Pershing's Own." The American Trombone Workshop (ATW) is the largest, national trombone event celebrating recitals, compositions, workshops, and concerts. The upcoming event will be held from March 25-28, 2026.

Luca Albano (BM '26) Selected as Ambassador of Sicily International Piano Festival to Participate in Special Masterclasses in Medellin, Colombia Nov 24, 2025 1:35 PM Piano student Luca Albano (BM ‘26) is selected as the Sicily International Music Festival Ambassador with a full scholarship to participate in the EAFIT Curso de Perfeccionamie in Medellin, Colombia on December 1-5. This is a special scholarship in honor of Luca's outstanding performance at the Sicily International Piano Festival in July, 2024.

Percussion Ensemble to perform at OMEA Oct 31, 2025 2:22 PM The BGSU Percussion Ensemble was selected to perform at the 2026 OMEA Professional Development Conference through a competitive application process. The ensemble will perform on Thursday, January 29th at 11 am in room A210-215 of the Columbus Convention Center.

KEAR Proposals Selected Oct 16, 2025 9:46 AM 4 composition master's students (Ezra D.H. Simmons, Orson Abram, Christian Glascock and Ömer Kurtuluş) proposals were chosen for this years KEAR residency with the Tak Ensemble! These students will craft original works for the ensemble, who will then come back to BGSU and record them in April!

Matthew Shephard Receives Multiple Honors Oct 14, 2025 10:39 AM Matthew Shephard, an adjunct instructor in our online MM in Teaching Artistry degree and director of bands at Meridan (MI) High School, recently received two honors. Mr. Shephard was named one of 15 national recipients of the 2025 Country Music Association Music Teacher of Excellence Award. He is also, for the fifth consecutive year, a semifinalist for the GRAMMY Music Educator of the Year Award.

Dr. Lisa Gruenhagen Published in TRIAD Oct 10, 2025 1:48 PM Dr. Lisa Gruenhagen, Associate Professor of Music Education, co-authored an article with Mrs. Anna McClure, M.M., for the Fall 2025 issue of TRIAD titled Being Mindful About Physical Well-Being in Elementary General Music. In their article, Dr. Gruenhagen and Mrs. McClure discuss how the general music program can be a powerful space for nurturing physical well-being.

Dr. Solungga Liu Conference Artist at KTMA Conference Oct 9, 2025 9:21 AM Piano professor Solungga Liu has been invited as Conference Artist of the 2025 Kentucky Music Teachers Association’s annual conference. She will present a solo recital on Friday, October 10 followed by a master class on Saturday, October 11. Both events are held in Greaves Hall, Northern Kentucky University.

Orson will be creating a sound installation that transforms mundane noise of a house into an interdisciplinary work under the guidance of project director Anthony R. Green and CAMP president Eunmi Ko.

Flute New Music Consortium Composition Competition DOUBLE winner! Sep 2, 2025 11:08 AM Christian Glascock on the Flute New Music Consortium Composition Competition this year in 2 different categories. His piece “Ascension” for flute quartet won in the Chamber Flute category, and his piece “Echoes of the Deep” for Alto flute and fixed media won in the Flute and Electronics category. His other piece “…if you do” was also awarded honorable mention in the Flute and Electronics category.

DMA Alumnus Nick Zoulek Releases Sophomore Solo Album, Enter Branch Sep 2, 2025 10:35 AM Almost as soon as saxophonist-composer Nick Zoulek (BGSU MM ’15; DMA ’19) released his first solo album, Rushing Past Willow (Innova Records), in 2016 while completing his doctoral degree, he began working on his second. Zoulek felt a need to continue developing the idiomatic compositional vocabulary that he had begun exploring in Rushing Past Willow.

DMA in Contemporary Music, Summer 2025 Highlights Aug 12, 2025 4:45 PM Students from BGSU’s DMA in Contemporary Music program showcased their performance and teaching chops locally, nationally, and internationally this past summer. In addition to their own recitals, concerts, and competitions, the fourteen full-time members of the 2024-25 DMA cohort took part in various festivals, institutes, and conferences, demonstrating that BGSU’s College of Musical Arts continues to be at the forefront of contemporary music.

DMA Performers Kick Off Exhibit at Sandusky Cultural Center Aug 8, 2025 4:45 PM On the afternoon of Sunday, April 27, students from the DMA in Contemporary Music program at BGSU performed at the Sandusky Cultural Center in conjunction with the opening of its Here & Now exhibit. The concert was organized by Chris Harris, a percussionist from Fairfield, California who had just completed his first year in the doctoral program.

BGSU Presence at the 2025 International Double Reed Society Conference Aug 8, 2025 3:15 PM The 2025 International Double Reed Conference (IDRS) was held at Butler University in Indianapolis June 10-14. All activities at the conference are approved by an IDRS panel through an application process or offered by special invitation, and BGSU exhibited a large presence at the conference this year with participation from faculty, current students, and alumni.

BGSU Tuba Graduate Assistant Sakda Pharchumcharna wins Brass Competition Mar 28, 2025 10:58 AM First year Master's Tuba Performance Major, Sakda Pharchumcharna has received first place in the Brass area of the 2025 Tuesday Musical Annual Scholarship. The Arden J. Yockey Scholarship comes with a $2000 award. Sakda has been invited to compete with the other winners from and perform in the winner's concert on May 4, 2025 for a chance at additional scholarships.

Prof. Plank releases Pulse on Panoramic Recordings Feb 25, 2025 3:25 PM On February 21, 2025, Prof. Aidan Plank along with pianist Anthony Fuoco, drummer Dustin May, and saxophonist Brad Wagner released their recording "Pulse" on Panoramic Recordings (an imprint on the New Focus Recordings label out of New York City). Pulse is also the name of the ensemble co-led by the musicians noted above and this debut recording represents the compositional and improvisational efforts of the ensemble over the past 7 years.

Dan Piccolo publishes new collection of snare drum music discovered in the BGSU Music Library Jan 15, 2025 9:48 AM Three boxes of un-catalogued materials from Charley Wilcoxon’s personal archives were donated to the BGSU Music Library, including a collection of manuscripts labelled "Swinging the Downfall of Paris". Up until now, the existence of these pieces hasn't been known, and they have now been edited and published.

CMA Alumna Jane Hines wins SMT Publication Award Nov 26, 2024 9:07 AM CMA alumna Jane Hines (MM Music History and MM Music Theory, 2015) was recently awarded the Society for Music Theory's Citation of Special Merit publication award for her translation of Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg's treatise, *Abhandlung von der Fuge* (*Treatise on Fugue*), 1753, from the original German.

Decker wins Society for Music Theory Publication Award Nov 20, 2024 3:25 PM Dr. Greg Decker (professor, music theory) as been awarded a prestigious publication award by the Society for Music Theory, the primary academic society for the study of music theory and analysis internationally. Decker's publication *Here for the Hearing: Analyzing the Music in Musical Theater* (University of Michigan Press, 2023) won SMT's Outstanding Multi-Author Collection publication award.

Graduate Percussion Ensemble to compete in the Concert Chamber Percussion Ensemble Competition in Indianapolis Nov 12, 2024 10:44 AM The BGSU Graduate Percussion Ensemble will be competing in the Concert Chamber Percussion Ensemble Competition on Thursday, November 14th. The competition is held during the annual Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Indianapolis, IN. Jacob Koch (2nd year DMA), Chris Harris (1st year DMA), and Nicholas Bahr (2nd year MM) will compete with students from all around the United States.

BGSU Percussion Ensemble welcomes Chris Sies for Fall Concert Oct 31, 2024 10:06 AM Chris Sies is a percussionist and composer currently based in Calgary, Canada. His work "Music for Horizon Lines" is a 30-minute piece in four movements for 4-6 percussionists and electronics. Mr. Sies will be on campus for 3-4 days to rehearse the piece and work with BGSU percussion students in lessons and masterclasses.

Robert Satterlee performs at State and National Conferences Oct 24, 2024 11:17 AM Robert Satterlee, professor of piano, recently gave solo performances at the Ohio Music Teachers Association State Conference, held in Akron, Ohio in October, and also at the American Liszt Society Festival, an event drawing pianists and scholars from all across the US. This year's festival was held in October at the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia.
