A Message from the Dean

From the Dean of the College of Musical Arts

The 2025/26 year was one of celebration, reflection, and renewed inspiration as we marked the 50th Anniversary of the College of Musical Arts’ founding in 1975. While music has been part of BGSU for more than a century, this year provided an opportunity to honor five decades of musical excellence while looking ahead to the future of our college and the generations of musicians we will continue to inspire. Our anniversary celebration brought together students, faculty, alumni, and friends through extraordinary events that reflected the creativity, innovation, and artistry that define the CMA.

Two multi-day residencies brought world-renowned ensembles to the CMA. The Hansen Musical Arts Series welcomed Grammy Award-winning artist Rhiannon Giddens and the Silkroad Ensemble, while the McMaster Vocal and Choral Series presented the Lorelei Ensemble, both exploring connections between music, culture, and community. The MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music continued its tradition of innovation and leadership with a special performance by students and faculty at National Sawdust in New York City, and the Men’s Chorus and Volaré shared their artistry through a joint tour of England and France. The year culminated with a spectacular 50th Anniversary Gala Concert, bringing nearly 300 students and faculty together on Kobacker Hall stage for a historic afternoon of music-making.

Our students achieved remarkable artistic and academic accomplishments, and faculty continued to distinguish themselves through teaching, research, scholarship, and creative activity. The energy throughout the College reflects the strength of our community and our shared commitment to musical excellence.

We are deeply grateful to our alumni, donors, and friends whose generosity and support make these transformative experiences possible. Their commitment enables the College of Musical Arts to provide exceptional opportunities for our students, support innovative programs, and share the power of music with audiences locally, nationally, and internationally.

For 50 years, the College of Musical Arts has been a place where tradition and innovation come together—where students discover their voices and faculty model artistic excellence for students and audiences alike. As we celebrate this important milestone, we look forward with excitement to the next chapter of the CMA’s story, and welcome you to the new academic year.

Thank you for being part of our vibrant and supportive community. Whether a student, faculty or staff member, alumnus, parent, or friend of the College, your involvement helps make the CMA a special place.

Please enjoy the CMA 2025–2026 Year in Review.

gulli-bj-rnsson-comp

Gulli Björnsson (b. 1991) is a guitarist and composer from Iceland whose music typically ties electronics, instruments and visuals to experiences in nature. Gulli’s music has been described as “hypnotic” (News Gazette),  “a knockout - wondrously inventive”  (Soundboard Magazine) and “modern, occasionally discordant, but still accessible” (Classical Guitar Magazine).
