DRAFT School of Cultural & Critical Studies

The School of Cultural and Critical Studies (SCCS) includes four interdisciplinary programs with distinct but complementary missions: American Culture Studies (ACS), Ethnic Studies (ETHN), Popular Culture (POPC), and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WS). These programs share a multidisciplinary approach, eclectic methodologies, a commitment to critical thinking and engagement, and an emphasis on how differences — cultural, national, economic, racial, sexual, etc. — are constructed and expressed.

American Culture Studies

American Culture Studies is an interdisciplinary program that is dedicated to the holistic study of American culture, society and institutions.

Popular Culture

Popular Culture educates students in ways to research and analyze the influence of the forms of creative expression we consume in everyday life, including television, film, and popular music.

Ethnic Studies

Ethnic Studies explores the ways in which racial and ethnic identities, social relations, cultures and geographical spaces have been shaped over time.

Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies

Women's Studies examines women’s lives locally and globally, focusing on how gender intersects with other forms of difference including race, disability, ethnicity, class, age and sexual orientation.

SCCS offers undergraduate majors in American Culture Studies, Ethnic Studies, Popular Culture, and Women's Studies and a range of minors, including Latino/a Studies and Folkore.

At the graduate level we offer a Masters in Popular Culture and a Ph.D. in Amercian Culture Studies as well as graduate certificates in Ethnic Studies, Women's Studies, and Public History.
