Canvas is the Learning Management System (LMS) system used at BGSU. Canvas is used amont BGSU faculty, staff, and students and should serve as the digital hub for all things related to your course. Students benefit from having a consistent course experience, so the CFE has compiled some best practices to guide you in the design and development of your online content delivery.

Canvas LMS offers features such as:

  • Course Creation and Management: Instructors can create courses, organize content into modules, and manage assignments, quizzes, and discussions.
  • Communication Tools: Canvas includes tools for announcements, messaging, and real-time chat to keep students informed and engaged.
  • Assessment and Feedback: Instructors can use SpeedGrader to provide detailed feedback on assignments and quizzes, and manage grades in the Gradebook.
  • Analytics: Canvas provides data on student performance and engagement, helping instructors make informed decisions about their teaching strategies

Getting Started with Canvas LMS

BGSU recommends beginning with Canvas by considering the following course aspects:

  1. Course Settings: Customize course settings and navigation to suit your needs.
  2. Syllabus: Create a syllabus using the rich content editor.
  3. Home Page: Design an engaging home page with important information and multimedia elements.
  4. Modules: Set up modules to organize course content.
  5. Assignments and Quizzes: Create and manage assignments and quizzes.
  6. Publishing: Publish your course and set lock dates to control access to content.

Using Canvas LMS for Different Class Formats

Canvas LMS is versatile and can be adapted to various class formats:

Online Classes
  • Modules: Organize content into modules that students can access sequentially. Include pages, assignments, discussions, and quizzes within each module.
  • Assignments and Quizzes: Create assignments with different submission types (e.g., file upload, text entry) and quizzes with varied question types (e.g., multiple choice, essay).
  • Discussions: Facilitate online discussions to encourage student interaction and engagement.
Hybrid Classes
  • Blended Learning: Combine online modules with face-to-face sessions. Use Canvas to provide pre-class readings, assignments, and quizzes, and then discuss them in person.
  • Collaborations: Use tools like Collaborations and Conferences to enable group work and virtual meetings.
Face-to-Face Classes
  • Supplemental Materials: Use Canvas to distribute course materials, such as lecture notes, readings, and assignments.
  • Feedback and Grades: Provide feedback on assignments and manage grades through Canvas, even if the majority of instruction happens in person.
