Professional Engagement Certificate

Program Overview

The CFE Professional Engagement Certificate Program is intended to recognize members of the BGSU community for their participation in professional development activities and their commitment to supporting student success through professional development. All BGSU faculty members, adjunct instructors, graduate students, and staff are welcomed and encouraged to participate in this program. The program provides opportunities to interact with colleagues from the BGSU community and to explore current, innovative, and effective teaching and learning strategies that support student success.

Program Outcomes

By participating in this certificate program, you will:

  • Set an action plan for your professional development.
  • Explore innovative teaching strategies that maximize student learning.
  • Interact with colleagues from across the BGSU community. 
  • Assess the knowledge gained and impact of your involvement in professional development activities on your work, teaching, and/or learning.
  • Earn recognition from the CFE, your department and/or college, and across campus.

Program Requirements

To successfully complete the program you must:

  • Attend at least one workshop from at least five of the different workshop categories within the academic year: Expectations, Support, Engagement, Feedback & Assessment, Inclusive Pedagogy, and Scholarship.
  • Submit the Professional Engagement Certificate Program Completion Form with the list of the workshops you attended and your reflections on the impact of the professional development on your work, teaching, and/or learning.

Professional Engagement Certificate Program Completion Form 2023-2024

Upon your completion of the above requirements, the CFE Team will review your completion form, including your reflections, verify your attendance at the workshops you listed, and decide whether or not you are eligible for the Certificate. Completion of the Professional Engagement Certificate Completion Form does not guarantee receipt of the Professional Engagement Certificate.  

Program Dates

To receive a 2023-2024 certificate, you must complete the program requirements and complete your Professional Engagement Certificate Program Completion Form by the end of the spring semester.

  • Friday, April 26, 2024: Completion form deadline.
  • Tuesday, May 7, 2024: Hard copy of certificate available for pickup by eligible participants (if requested) at the Teaching & Learning Summit.
  • By Wednesday, May 8, 2024: Digital certificate and email signature stamp sent to all eligible participants.

If you requested a letter from the CFE Director verifying your completion of the program and/or a notification sent to your department verifying your completion of the program, you will receive those after May 8th.

Program Recognition

If you successfully complete the Professional Engagement Certificate Program, you will receive the following forms of recognition:

  • A digital certificate for the academic year that you completed the program; this certificate can be uploaded to Faculty 180.
  • A digital email signature stamp for the academic year that you completed the program; this stamp can be added to your email signature.
  • Acknowledgement at the annual BGSU Teaching & Learning Summit on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Olscamp Hall.

Upon your request, you may also receive the following forms of recognition*:

  • A hard copy of your certificate for the academic year that you completed the program
  • A letter from the CFE director verifying your successful completion of the program
  • A notification sent to your department verifying your successful completion of the program

*You must indicate on the Professional Engagement Certificate Program Completion Form if you would like to receive any of these additional forms of recognition.

  • Full-time Tenure-Track and Qualified-Rank faculty
  • Adjunct instructors
  • Graduate students
  • Administrative and classified staff (full and part-time)

Yes, you do not need to work on the Main Campus to participate in this program. Members of the BGSU community who are located at Firelands campus and/or work remotely or on hybrid schedule may participate in the program by attending virtual CFE workshops. Please keep in mind that not all CFE workshops are available online. Please check the Workshop Catalog page for modality information for individual workshops.

No, you will need to select one category per workshop when answering the CFE Professional Engagement Certificate Completion Form. Each workshop can only fulfill one category requirement.

Workshops listed on the Workshop Catalog page are eligible for this program.

Participation in the Graduate Student Instructor Orientation, New Faculty Orientation, Learning Communities, ID consultations, drop-in sessions, and other CFE events do not count towards the Professional Engagement Certificate Program.

Yes, if you are a full-time faculty member, you may upload the PDF of your CFE Professional Engagement Certificate to Faculty180, BGSU’s faculty activity reporting system.

Yes. In the summer of 2023, the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) transitioned the Teaching & Learning Certificate Program into the Professional Engagement Certificate Program to better reflect the requirements and outcomes of the certificate program. Additionally, the new name reflects the fact that all members of the BGSU teaching community are eligible and encouraged to participate in this program. 

The workshop participation requirement for the Professional Engagement Certificate Program is similar to that of the former Teaching & Learning Certificate Program. However, some changes have been made to the program requirements – including the requirement of the Professional Engagement Certificate Program Interest Form as well as an expanded impact statement requirement for the Professional Engagement Certificate Completion Form. 

Yes, you can participate in the Professional Engagement Certificate Program if you have already received your Teaching and Learning Certificate or any other certificate offered by the CFE.

Yes, since the roster of workshops being offered by the CFE changes every year, you may earn a certificate more than once. You can earn a certificate for each year you complete the requirements. Your digital certificate and badge will be time-stamped with the academic year that you completed the program.

Yes, participating in a CFE-led workshop for your department or area counts towards your requirements for the Professional Engagement Certificate. You should complete the CFE Department Workshop Attendance Form to ensure your attendance is tracked. Indicate the department workshop you attended and the date of the workshop under the appropriate category on the Professional Engagement Certificate Completion Form.
