Overview

Assistant Director (AD) : Academic Support & Assessment | The AD of Academic Support & Assessment is responsible for incorporating BGSU’s academic mission and strategies in to the on-campus residence halls through intentional initiatives, programs and services. This position serves as the primary liaison between the Office of Residence Life and Academic Affairs, including residential learning community programs. The Assistant Director also leads departmental assessment initiatives by developing and implementing an annual assessment plan that aligns with University, division and department strategic goals and missions. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a Masters degree required, preferably in College Student Personal, Higher Education or related field. 
  • Two to three years of experience working in a housing or residence life operation.
  • Two years of experience working with residential learning communities or academic programs in a university setting.
  • One to two years of experience in assessment initiatives.

Compensation and Benefits

Full-time, Administrative Staff position available. Administrative Grade Level 355. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Full benefit package available.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of collegial student development theory.
  • Knowledge of assessment programs, quantitative and qualitative assessment methods, and in statistical analysis.
  • Experience in developing and facilitating workshops.
  • Knowledge of residence hall operations, creation and management of residential learning communities.
  • Experience planning, developing, managing and reconciling budgets.
  • Prior work with crisis management, university crisis teams and student conduct.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication and administrative skills.
  • Demonstrated desire to work with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Knowledge of academic, leadership or diversity programming, theory, and trends.
  • Ability to work on several projects concurrently.
  • Creative problem solving skills.
  • Develops, coordinates, plans and implements all academic programs and initiatives for the on-campus student population; including targeted outreach to students from multiple campus offices.
  • Serves as the Office of Residence’s liaison with Academic Advising, Undergraduate Education in the Provost’s Office, Learning Commons and Career Center to foster on-going communication between the areas. Provides training and professional development to undergraduate, graduate and professional staff in Residence Life regarding academic programs and initiatives throughout the campus.
  • Co-directs the Residential Faculty Mentors program.
  • Coordinates UNIV 2100, a credit-bearing course for future Resident Advisors.
  • Develops new ideas and initiatives that align BGSU with best practices in the areas of academic support and engagement for on-campus student populations. This includes the creation of an Academic Peer Mentor program for Residence Life.
  • Assists in identifying and implementing appropriate means of assessing learning outcomes for initiatives in this area, including collaborations between Academic Affairs areas and those in Residence Life
  • Collaborates with the Director of Learning Communities to train and support residential Learning Community Directors
  • Problem-solves with the Office of Residence Life housing staff to manage Learning Community housing occupancy communications, procedures and related issues
  • Works closely with the Learning Community Directors to promote a seamless on-campus living experience for students and to foster excellent working relationships with the residence hall staff
  • Assists in strengthening existing Learning Communities and in the development of new communities.
  • Serves on the Learning Community Advisory Board
  • Assists in identifying and implementing appropriate means of assessing learning outcomes for Learning Communities.

  • Incorporates university, division, and department annual imperatives and learning outcomes throughout the various functional areas in Residence Life.
  • Coordinates the development, review, and revision of Office of Residence Life Learning Outcomes and strategic initiatives.
  • Coordinates all assessment activities including the annual student satisfaction survey, benchmarking surveys, staff evaluation data collection and other requested projects.
  • Serves on assessment related committees.
  • Provides training and development on assessment related initiatives.
  • Utilizes applications such as Campus Labs and Qualtrics to maintain and analyze data. Writes assessment reports on various programs and services provided by the office.
  • Works with Institutional Research and the HSRB board, as appropriate.
  • Advises Office of Residence Life Committees.
  • Oversee the academic initiatives budget in Residence Life
  • Serves as a team member and liaison with Assistant Directors, Coordinators and others within Residence Life and the larger university community.
  • Participates in local, state, regional and national conferences and other professional development opportunities.
  • Serves on Division of Student Affairs and University committees
  • Serves as a judicial hearing officer for the campus conduct process, as needed
  • Serves as a member of the Senior Staff on-call duty rotation
  • Directly supervises one graduate assistant for academic initiatives.
  • Provides feedback and evaluative comments to the Hall Directors regarding expectations for academic programs and assessment initiatives.
