Military Call-up Procedures
The offices of Nontraditional and Military Student Services and Registration and Records helps students in the Reserves, National Guard or other military branches who are called to serve while enrolled. Contact Nontraditional and Military Student Services as soon as you know you are being called up.
What to do if you’ve been called up
- Submit your orders and the military call-up checksheet. You must provide a copy of your military orders and the checksheet to Nontraditional and Military Student Services.
- Authorize someone to act on your behalf (if necessary). If you don’t have time to make the necessary arrangements, you may designate another person to do so by submitting a signed letter or power of attorney.
Your academic options
- If called during final exam week – You may complete coursework early. You must contact professors to make arrangements.
- If called before final exam week – you may:
- Remain enrolled in classes for the semester and either:
- Complete course requirements early.
- Make individual arrangements with faculty members.
- Course work is completed prior to reporting for duty.
- Earned final grades are reported by the faculty members
- Complete course requirements at a later date.
- A notation of "In Progress" (IP) is recorded in place of a grade. The IP notation will be changed to an "Incomplete" (INC) grade after you are readmitted to BGSU.
- The student contacts faculty members and completes course requirements after returning from duty.
- The college office is encouraged to grant an extension of one semester following the student's return to campus for completing incomplete work.
- Complete course requirements early.
- Remain enrolled in class(es) and drop other class(es).
- Students complete classes. (See procedures listed in the previous step.)
- Students drop other classes by appeal through their college offices. A grade of W will be assigned if dropped past the deadline.
- Withdraw from all classes for the semester.
- Each class will be dropped from the student's record.
- The following notation will be printed on the transcript for the semester: "Student called to serve in the military."
- Remain enrolled in classes for the semester and either:
The Office of Registration and Records will notify the Veteran Benefits Administration about withdrawals and last dates of attendance for students who are receiving educational benefits.
Financial and housing information
- Room fees: 100% refund if you withdraw, prorated if you remain enrolled
- Meal plans: refunded based on unused balance
- Books: if purchased from Falcon Outfitters, may be returned there. Contact Falcon Outfitters to make individual arrangements for refund amounts.
- Tuition and fees: reviewed and refunded by the Bursar
- Financial aid: reviewed under federal, state and BGSU policies
After you return
Students will be eligible to be readmitted to the University after completion of their active duty. Contact Nontraditional and Military Student Services for more information about readmittance.
