PROJECT ASSETS: ADVANCING THE SCIENCE SKILLS OF ELEMENTARY TEACHERS AND STUDENTS

A NEW and exciting FREE program offering more than 100 contact hours of high-quality, research-based teacher professional development for Ohio teachers in grades 3-5 on inquiry science and STEM-related curricula.

Project ASSETS is an Ohio Department of Higher Education grant-funded program offering no-cost, Ohio Learning Standards-based sessions, a focus on diverse learners, science and cross-curricular materials, and a $300 stipend to grades 3-5 teachers who participate. Project ASSETS is open to Ohio grades 3-5 teachers of all subject areas who would like additional professional development in inquiry and STEM subject areas.

PHASE I: Spring Kick-Off Session – May 17, 2016
Teacher participants will experience an introduction to the overall project by engaging in the 5E-learning model through rich hands-on, inquiry based lessons. Teacher participants will meet the project leadership team.

PHASE II: Summer Workshop – June 13-17, 20-22
This exciting summer session will provide opportunities for third through fifth grade teachers/inclusion specialists to participate in hands-on content sessions relevant to Ohio’s Learning Standards in Science at each grade level. Experienced science educators along with scientists and special educators will deliver high quality investigative sessions in a 5E lesson format. Teachers will come away with ready-to-go units to implement in their classrooms.

PHASE III: Academic Year
Teachers will participate in the highly popular STEM in the Park (Sept. 24, 2016) and Symposium on STEM Teaching (Nov. 19, 2016) events. Participants will also engage in four cohort meetings (Oct., Dec., Feb., April) designed as Science Communities and facilitated in a ‘lesson study’ format as teacher participants reflect and report on the 5-E investigative units in which they are integrating in their classrooms.
