BGSU Hosting Nation’s First Service Marketing Competition in February

Service excellence is important because services represent 85% of U.S. employment and 81% of our gross domestic product. The College of Business sees the significance of these statistics and is one of the few universities in the country to have an undergraduate business program focused on service marketing and selling services.

In addition to offering a new sales and services marketing specialization, the College of Business is hosting the nation’s first National Service Marketing Competition, February 13-15.  Seven teams, including a team from BGSU, will demonstrate their outstanding service marketing skills during three rounds of competition.

Round 1 includes the teams submitting a service blueprint prior to the competition based on a case developed by the competition’s primary sponsor Garage Management Company. Service blueprints will be judged by a three-member faculty team with expertise in service marketing from non-competing schools. Round 2 involves service recovery with the teams receiving a major service issue from the competition’s sponsor once they arrive on campus and then preparing a solution the next day to present to a panel of judges composed on sponsoring company representatives. The third round will record one student from each team handling a customer service complaint.

The top three teams with the most points will compete in the final round with representatives from sponsoring companies choosing the first, second, and third place finishers. An individual winner from Round 3 will also be chosen. Cash prizes will be given to the top three teams and the individual winner.

Special thanks go to our sponsoring companies – Garage Management Company and Brown & Brown Insurance.
