National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 (NLSY97)

Family Structure Snapshot

Waves 1-12 of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997—a national sample of roughly 9,000 youth (aged 12 to 16 in 1997) followed annually through 2008—provide multiple measures related to family structure, including current living arrangements and relationships, relationship history, and family background. Also available are event-history variables allowing researchers to track respondents’ marriages and cohabiting relationships in a continuous-month scheme.
