Service-learning happens in many different ways.
We can help you incorporate service-learning into your curriculum – everything from designing an experience to implementation and assessment.
Service-learning is a class-based, credit-bearing educational experience that integrates:
- Academic material
- Community-based engagement and/or service activities
- Critical reflection
This partnership between BGSU and the community benefits our students and also helps advance public good. Getting started with service-learning and implementing the practice into your classroom takes many shapes, including:
- Requiring students to complete service hours as part of their course assignments
- Developing a semester-long project to support a local organization
- Learning the complexities of a community issue and proposing solutions to resolve it at the city, state, or national level
The Marvin Center offers workshops and resources to faculty and staff on any topic that’s relevant to service-learning and leadership.
- Looking for a guest presenter in your course?
- Would you like your team to operate more efficiently?
- Do you want to incorporate a trip into your service-learning course?
- Do you think your students or colleagues would benefit from learning about leadership styles?
We can help with all of that – and more!
This Marvin Center has a team of undergraduate student, graduate stuent, and staff facilitators who will leverage their expertise to engage your students, staff, or organization in impactful content, intent on developing their skills and confidence as a leader.

The Marvin Center's employee recognition initiative, in collaboration with Classified Staff Council and Administrative Staff Council, celebrates staff who contribute meaningful service to communities outside of the university. This program aims to elevate the value of civic engagement among BGSU employees and highlight how staff embody BGSU’s commitment to public good. Over the course of the academic year, this program recognizes staff who:
- Reach individual service milestones (e.g., 5, 10, 20 hours)
- Hold a leadership role in the community (e.g., board service)
- Participate in serve as part of a team or department
Many BGSU employees are actively engaged in volunteer work, board service, coaching, local organizing, and nonprofit support. By participating in the Recognition Program, staff have the oppprtunity to share their story of volunteerism and encourage others to engage with the community as well.
