Scholarship Frequently Asked Questions

Students apply for most scholarships at BGSU by completing the General Scholarship Application through the Searchable Scholarship Guide.

To access the application, please log into your MyBGSU and click on the “Scholarship Opportunities” tile. You will be prompted to complete the General Scholarship Application.

The General Scholarship Application, through the Searchable Scholarship Guides, opens on October 1 each year. Please continue to check back throughout the year as new listings are added.

Scholarship deadlines do vary, it is important that you review deadlines carefully. Scholarships with a January deadline are typically notified of selection by March. Scholarships with a March deadline are typically notified of selection by May.

Scholarship awards are very competitive and if you are selected, you will be notified via email or letter by the awarding office noted in the scholarship listing. We ask that you please not contact the awarding office regarding the status of the review or to see if you have been selected as a scholarship recipient. Due to the high volume of scholarship applicants, only those awarded a scholarship will be notified.

You cannot add a resume or other document to the General Scholarship application. However, certain applications do require a resume, coversheet, and/or the submission of additional documents. For those applications, you will need to review the scholarship criteria and submit all of the requested documents by the published deadline. You will not receive any reminders to complete these steps and incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

If the scholarship that you are applying for requires letters of recommendation, you will be able to enter the names and email addresses of the individuals you would like to submit a letter of recommendation on your behalf. Your reference will receive an email directing them to the page to submit their recommendation. You can view the status of your letter of recommendation requests by reviewing your application in the system.

Unless specifically stated otherwise, responses to each question on the General Scholarship Application are required for successful submission. Upon successful submission of your application, you should see the following message:

  • "Your application was successfully submitted/saved." You will be sent to either a college specific scholarship application or your scholarship landing page where you can edit your applications or search for additional scholarships. 

Remember that certain scholarships may require the submission of additional materials such as a letter of recommendation or a cover sheet. Those scholarships can be viewed under the Recommended Opportunities tab at the top of the page. You must submit the additional materials in the portal by no later than the deadline listed on the scholarship for your application to be considered complete. You will not receive any reminders to complete these steps and incomplete applications will not be reviewed. 

Yes, you can edit an application until the submission deadline listed on the scholarship. Any changes to responses will result in updates to all of your responses to that same question in each of your applications. To edit your application, log into your MyBGSU and click on the Scholarship Opportunities tile.
