Hazing Violations Report

BGSU seeks to promote a safe environment where members of our learning community may participate in experiences and activities without compromising their health, well-being, dignity and/or rights. Hazing can cause irreparable harm to victims, victims’ families and the University community. BGSU has zero tolerance for any form of hazing.

In addition to University policy, state law requires universities to report violations of the University’s policies prohibiting hazing for the last five years.

Understanding the Report

Key Terms

Recognized Student Organization vs. Individual Outcome - Both recognized student organizations as well as individuals can be found responsible for violations of the University’s policy prohibiting hazing. This list includes recognized student organizations and/or individual(s) found responsible for violating the University’s policies prohibiting hazing.

Date of Report - Date that the Office of the Dean of Students was notified of the misconduct.

Semester of Incident - The semester in which the reported misconduct took place.

Description of Violation - A summary of the conduct/policy violation for which the organization or individual was found responsible.

Date Charged - The date an individual or student organization was charged with an policy violation.

Resolution Date - The date an individual or student organization's case was resolved.

Subject

Recognized student organization (RSO) - Defined as a group of people who are associated with each other and who have registered with the University as a student organization as outlined in University Policy 3341-2-36.

Student group - Defined as number of persons who are associated with the University and each other, but who have not registered, or are not required to register as a student organization (e.g., athletic teams, spirit groups, military organizations, honor societies, musical or theatrical ensembles, bands, or clubs).

Individual - Defined as an individual BGSU student from the time they are admitted to the University up through the date of graduation. This term includes, but is not limited to: (a) Newly admitted student(s) who have attended orientation; (b) Currently enrolled individual(s), including dual-enrolled student(s); and/or (c) An individual who has been enrolled in classes within the prior two semesters (i.e., summer, fall, or spring).

Sanctions

Expulsion - Permanent separation of the student from the University and a permanent notation on one’s transcript. The student may also be permanently prohibited from being present on all University property.

Suspension - Separation of the student from the University for a defined period of time, after which the student is eligible to return, and a permanent notation on one’s transcript. While on suspension, the student is prohibited from being present on all University property. Conditions for readmission may be specified.

Deferred Suspension - Separation from the university for a defined period of time unless specified educational sanctions are successfully completed and the respondent has no further violations of any university policy while on a status of deferred suspension. Upon successful completion of educational sanctions and after the defined period of time, university conduct probation will be assigned for a defined period of time. Failure to complete educational sanctions and/or a violation(s) of this Code while on deferred suspension may result in suspension from the university. Respondents on deferred suspension are not considered to be in good conduct standing with the university.

University Conduct Probation - University conduct probation is for a designated period of time and includes the probability of more severe sanctions, including suspension or expulsion, if the student, recognized student organization, or student group is found in violation of any University policy while on University conduct probation.

Warning - A written reprimand specifying the violation for which the student, recognized student organization, or student group is being held responsible.

Other Possible Outcomes - educational sanctions, restrictions, loss of privileges.
