Mandatory Academic Advising Appointments

Our centralized team of Academic Advisors and Planners assist students from all colleges in pursuing a degree. Advisors help you make informed decisions about course selection, understand university curriculum, build an academic schedule, and connect with academic resources to be successful throughout your time at Bowling Green State University and beyond.

Mandatory Academic Advising Appointments

We highly recommend you reach out to your Academic Advisor and Planner or assigned faculty member, no matter your class standing, prior to scheduling your classes – but if you are a first-time new student or transfer student this semester at BGSU, you will be REQUIRED to meet with your Academic Advisor and Planner prior to registering your classes. If you attempt to register for classes prior to meeting this requirement, you will see a hold on your account.

It is also important for you to know that you are responsible for scheduling your classes. Meeting with an advisor does not mean your classes have been scheduled and they will not schedule your classes for you. Your advisor is here to support you and go over any questions you have, help you understand what course options you have and what courses are required for you to graduate. Please review the information listed below to learn more about advising and to book your appointment.

It is highly recommended that you connect with your Academic Advisor and Planner or assigned faculty member before you register for classes each semester – but the only students who will have a registration hold on their account until a meeting has taken place are new, first-time and transfer students as described below:

Required:

  • First-time new BGSU students this academic year. This requirement is placed on fall and spring enrollment.
  • College Credit Plus (CCP) Students
  • New transfer students*

Not Required:

  • All returning students

*Before the first semester only during the orientation process.

The mandatory academic advising requirement is designed to help you establish a meaningful, working relationship with your Academic Advisor and Planner; who will help you become familiar with policies, procedures and degree programs and requirements early in your academic journey at BGSU.

The more informed you are, the more likely you are to set yourself up for a successful academic journey by understanding your ideal course loads and course selections each semester.

Preparing for Class Registration

It is important for you to understand when and how you should register for classes so you are able to select the best possible classes for you each semester. To know when you can register for classes, visit the Registration Checklist so you can plan to meet with your advisor before your date.
