BGSU, Girl Scouts of Western Ohio to celebrate 'World Thinking Day'

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Girl Scouts of Western Ohio and Bowling Green State University are partnering to celebrate "World Thinking Day" on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 10 a.m. to noon, in the Multipurpose Room of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union.

Observed by 10 million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts worldwide, World Thinking Day has a different theme each year. In 2023, the theme is “Our World, Our Peaceful Future: The environment, peace, and security.”

About 50 area Girl Scouts and their families will have an exclusive opportunity to meet with BGSU international students to learn about culture, food, language and more.

Each girl will receive a "passport" and will travel booth to booth to learn about each student's home country.

"With students from more than nine countries pursuing an education at BGSU, Girl Scouts will be able to learn about multiple cultures in one place," said Dr. Marcia Salazar-Valentine, director of International Programs and Partnerships. "The students are excited to share their stories, display their heritage and serve as 'ambassadors' for their countries."

Each February, Girl Scouts and Girl Guides across 150 countries celebrate World Thinking Day. It’s a day of international friendship and a time to stand up for causes that aim to improve the lives of girls around the globe.

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), which Girl Scouts are part of, has celebrated World Thinking Day since 1926.

“We are excited to once again partner with BGSU to provide this event for girls. World Thinking Day helps girls gain a better understanding and appreciation for other cultures and customs worldwide. Small group discussions with international students, along with hands-on learning opportunities, give girls a better sense of the diverse scope of our world. We know these opportunities are important, as they can open doors for girls to make new friendships and advocate for others,” said Alissa Wauford, community development manager for Girl Scouts of Western Ohio.
