BGSU Firelands, Sandusky City Schools partner on affordable path to college

HURON, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Firelands and Sandusky City Schools are continuing their longstanding commitment to student success by offering scholarships to graduating Sandusky High School students who enroll at BGSU Firelands this fall.

Sandusky High School graduates can benefit from two new scholarships:

The Sandusky Promise: Federal Pell Grant-eligible students who graduate from Sandusky High School in 2022 and enroll at BGSU Firelands will receive a scholarship that covers the balance of their instructional and general fees for the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters after the Federal Pell Grant is applied.

The Next Steps Award: SHS Students for S.U.C.C.E.S.S., Sandusky Career Center and 22+ Adult High School Diploma program graduates will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

To be eligible for either scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Sandusky High School graduate in spring 2022
  • Enroll at the BGSU Firelands campus
  • Enroll in an associate degree program
  • Enroll for 12 to 18 credits
  • Be classified as an Ohio resident for tuition purposes
  • Have a high school GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Complete admissions and financial aid applications no later than June 1, 2022

“Increasing access to higher education by reducing student cost is a priority for BGSU Firelands,” BGSU Firelands Dean Andy Kurtz said. “Investing scholarship dollars in the Sandusky community is a natural fit given the origin of BGSU Firelands and our longstanding commitment to the city.”

The first iteration of BGSU Firelands operated in Sandusky High School in the mid-1960s. Although the campus as it’s known today opened in 1968 just east of the city on Rye Beach Road, BGSU Firelands has maintained its close connection with Sandusky through a series of academic partnerships.

“Sandusky City Schools is committed to creating partnerships that benefit the success of our students,” said Dr. Eugene Sanders, chief executive officer and superintendent of Sandusky City Schools. “This partnership with BGSU Firelands will provide our high school graduates with access to higher education at a lower cost. This will benefit them for years to come and we encourage all those who are eligible to apply.”
