Five ways BGSU students can maximize the career fair experience

The Kuhlin Career EXPO at Bowling Green State University, a week-long career-readiness event that can serve as a launching point for future careers, will allow students to attend workshops facilitated by Career Design Coaches and connect with employers from a variety of different industries across two days on Sept. 17 and 18. But EXPO Week is much more that – it’s a chance for students to design their future careers.

Whether learning directly from employers or developing durable skills such as interviewing and networking skills, there are many ways for BGSU students to succeed during EXPO week.

1. Register for Career Forge and try out the Career Fair Plus app

Using their BGSU email address, students can register for Career Forge and download the Career Fair Plus app to make their week go as smoothly as possible. Prior to attending, students can plan their EXPO experience with an interactive map and a list of employers who will be present on the Career Fair Plus app.

2. Assemble a free professional outfit

Mr. Agne’s Career Collection provides free professional attire for BGSU students, helping them look their best without having to make expensive clothing purchases. The thrift-shop-style store, located at 117 Eppler South, is staffed by students in the fashion merchandising and product development program, who use their fashion know-how to help student clients find the right look for professional settings.

Active BGSU students and alumni from the most recent commencement are eligible for one free outfit per year with their BGSU ID.

3. Workshop your elevator pitch

Students will have multiple opportunities to workshop how to make a great first impression at the Simulation Lab from noon to 1 p.m. on Sept. 16.

By working with BGSU Career Design Coaches, students can build confidence by practicing how to make a strong first impression, network and ask good questions in an interview, all while gaining real-time feedback. Students also can access VMOCK, an AI-based resume an interview platform, at any day and time. Registration is required, and participants are encouraged to bring their lunch to the event.

4. Network in your field

The job fairs during EXPO Week allow students to network with employers in a variety of industries across multiple days, allowing them to craft their own schedule based on their major and areas of interest. Recruiters from business and social impact-focused employers will be on campus for day one, on Sept. 17, with STEM and innovation recruiters on campus for day two.

The Lenhart Grand Ballroom will play host to both days of the EXPO from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Check-in for the first day is located in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union Multipurpose Room, but will be in the Sky Bank Room (201) for the second day.

5. Drop-in with a Career Design Coach

After students complete the whirlwind EXPO week and network with possible employers, what comes next? BGSU Career Design Coaches will be around to help them make sense of it all and design their next steps.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 19, students can drop in with a Career Design Coach to evaluate their strategies, refine their career goals and explore new opportunities.
